Policewoman becomes an advanced driver in Oxford in 1963

Chief Inspector George Miller, of Oxford City Police, said: “Mrs Strutt has proved to be an excellent driver – every bit as good as the men.

“The only snag is that now all the other seven policewomen in the force will probably want to become advanced drivers.”

Mrs Strutt had driven 500 miles preparing for her test, under the watchful eye of Pc Daff.

Her training had included talks on driving, practical demonstrations and skid pan tests.

Oxford City Police lasted until 1968.
