AC Milan ready to open talks to sign Norwich star Andrew Omobamidele as price tag emerges

AC Milan are looking at making a shock summer swoop for Norwich City defender Andrew Omobamidele, TEAMtalk understands.

The Irish international is being strongly linked with a Premier League move with Nottingham Forest and newly promoted duo Sheffield United and Burnley all taking an interest.

However, TEAMtalk understands that Italian giants Milan are now ready to open talks over a deal for the 20-year-old centre-half.

The fee for Omobamidele would be over £15million, since Norwich have the centre-back under contract until 2026.

The 20-year-old made 34 appearances in the Championship this season, enjoying the busiest campaign of his career to date.

In the process, he has caught the attention of Geoffrey Moncada, who has been working as Milan’s chief scout but is now expected to step up following the dismissals of Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara from the boardroom.

TEAMtalk understands Moncada has pushed Milan’s interest in Omobamidele.

Omobamidele in line for rare move to AC Milan

Should he make the move to Italy and appear for Stefano Pioli’s first team, Omobamidele could become just the second player from the Republic of Ireland to represent Milan after Paddy Sloan in the 1940s.

Milan’s youth squad does currently contain another Irishman in the shape of Cathal Heffernan, who is yet to make his senior debut after a 2022 move from Cork City.

Two other Irish players currently plying their trade in Serie A are Udinese duo, James Abankwah and Festy Ebosele.

Omobamidele, for his part, now has the chance to become the first player to ever move directly from Norwich – who finished 13th in the Championship this season in their first campaign since relegation – to Milan.

To date, he has made 51 appearances for Norwich since breaking into their first team. Five of those came in the Premier League during the 2021-22 season.

As stated, there is interest from Nottingham Forest, Burnley and Sheffield United in taking him back to the top flight, but Milan could offer him Champions League football if he is ready to uproot to Italy.

The Rossoneri’s current centre-backs include Fikayo Tomori (another player to have been bought by Milan from an English club, Chelsea), Pierre Kalulu, Malick Thiaw, Matteo Gabbia and Simon Kjaer. The latter, now 34, is about to enter the final year of his contract.
