Advice and information event for Fenland community groups

Residents, community organisations and landowners interested in developing nature restoration projects in Fenland are being invited to an advice and information event next month.

Fenland District Council, Natural Cambridgeshire, PECT (Peterborough Environment City Trust) and Cambridgeshire ACRE have joined forces to host a Nature Recovery event on Thursday July 13, at March Community Centre.

The event is being funded by a Together for Our Planet award from the National Lottery Community Fund.

We can all do something whether that is planting wildflowers, encouraging more nature on farmland or simply creating more space for wildlife in our gardens.

Groups and individual volunteers can discover how to add a range of environmental, economic and social benefits to projects, find out how to access training and learn new skills, and where to access funds to turn ideas into a reality.

Cllr Peter Murphy, the council’s portfolio holder for the environment, said: “Nature recovery can bring huge benefits to the area – reverse the decline in wildlife, manage flood risk and reduce carbon, improve soil, clean water and clean air, and improve people’s health and wellbeing too.

“Whether you’re inspired to plant trees, create a pond, hold a nature day, or would like support and advice with an existing nature project, we would love to help.”

Pamela Abbott, director of Natural Cambridgeshire, said: “Natural Cambridgeshire and our partners are delighted to be working with Fenland District Council and local communities towards doubling nature in Fenland.

“Whether that is planting wildflowers, encouraging more nature on farmland or simply creating more space for wildlife in our gardens, we can all do something.

“When nature thrives, we all thrive. We encourage anyone who has an interest in doing more for nature where they live to come along and find out more.”

The Nature Recovery event is being held at March Community Centre in Station Road, March, on Thursday 13 July, with three sessions taking place:

• 10am to 12.30pm

• 2pm to 4.30pm

• 5.30pm to 7pm

Refreshments will be available throughout the day, with a free buffet lunch from 1pm-2pm. There will also be a short inspirational talk at the beginning of all three sessions.
