Anfield’s roof removed in new footage with Liverpool set for fourth biggest Prem stadium

After a difficult campaign, Liverpool fans already have something to look forward to ahead of next season as the Anfield redevelopment enters its latest phase.

And developers have wasted no time in advancing plans for the Anfield Road End as the term came to a close on Sunday. The Reds ended their Premier League campaign with a 4-4 draw against Southampton at St. Mary’s, though work was already underway removing the old roof back on Merseyside.

The £80million makeover is expected to last throughout the summer and will increase the stadium’s capacity by around 7,000 seats. Liverpool have even requested to play their first game of next season away from home in order to allow the necessary time for Phase Two to be completed.

New images have shown the progress made in recent days after several huge cranes were wheeled onto the Anfield pitch site. And footage posted on YouTube channel KC Imageworks showed the Anfield Road End roof being lifted from its perch in real time.

A new stadium structure will be fitted onto the existing Main Stand once the Anfield Road roof is out of the way. The ground is already considered among the world’s top football venues after many a memorable night on Merseyside, but a new-look home should grant Jurgen Klopp & Co. that extra gloss.

Fans replied to footage of the roof removal with chimes of ‘wow’, while some rivals taunted it’s a ‘shame’ the ground won’t feature in next season’s Champions League. Anfield has hosted many a historic moment in Europe’s premier competition, but a fifth-place league finish meant they fell four points shy of qualifying.
