Bear vs. Loom & Leaf: Memory Foam Mattresses Review & Comparison – Video

Speaker 1: Should you go for luxury memory foam or a much cheaper memory foam? That’s what we’re going to talk about in today’s video. Speaker 1: Hey, how are you? This is Owen. I’m a CNET and we’re doing our head-to-head comparison between the newly designed original Bayer mattress and the couch’s lumen sheet mattress. Just looking at these two beds you might think this is a bit of an unfair comparison, but I think there’s quite a bit to dive into. We’re going to talk about how this one [00:00:30] beds are similar, how they differ, and why you’d want one over the other. Speaker 1: Let’s start this comparison by comparing the policy information. These are things like returns, trial periods, and warranties. Now these are normally pretty much the same. Except for maybe one has a longer trial period, maybe one has a longer warranty, but here’s actually quite a bit different. [00:01:00] So if you order the bare mattress online, it will slide you into a box completely free of charge. This is how the vast majority of online mattress brands will do. It just appears in a box about four feet high. You bring it in, you open it, you tear off all the plastic wrapping and you look at a new mattress in Inflate. This is a fairly quick and easy process to do, but Safa does it a little differently as they are a more luxury oriented brand. They offer free white glove delivery. This means that the bed will appear in full size. Speaker 1: It doesn’t appear in a box. There is no degassing process you have to deal with and [00:01:30] a local delivery team will show up with it and they’ll bring it in and set it up for you and they’ll even take your old mattress if you want which is actually quite a nice feature to have because throwing out an old mattress can be quite a be hassle. The big advantage is that you don’t actually have to do anything at all. The only real downside to our glove delivery is that it can sometimes take a bit longer than a mattress to show up in a box because they have to coordinate with the local delivery team instead of sending it through UPS or FedEx. Either way, once the mattress rolls to your door, by any means, you’ll get a trial period with both brands. Speaker 1: [00:02:00] Bayer gives you 120 nights, so about four months to sleep on the bed at home to determine whether you like it or not. Sofa goes the extra mile and offers a full year trial period, which is very nice. I think you should know within the first two to three months if you want to keep a mattress or not. So I think the trial period bear is more than adequate, but having more time is always nice to have. You can change your mind in month 10 and still get your money back. When it comes to refunds and returns, bears are completely free and you get a full refund, you don’t have to worry about that. With Sattva you will be able [00:02:30] to get your money back. However, they will charge a $99 transportation fee to initiate a return. This is because white glove delivery is more expensive than delivering items in a box. Speaker 1: So keep that in mind. Perhaps you are someone who suffers from buyer’s remorse. You will receive a small compensation if you are going to return a sheet mattress. If you decide to keep the beds, you’re looking at a lifetime warranty with Bear and another lifetime warranty with Lumen Leaf, but enough about all the policies. Let’s move on to the more important things and we’re going to start with what these beds have in common, and that’s not all [00:03:00] so much. Most importantly, both beds are all foam constructions, and when we say all foam, that means all the layers in the cover, the cover isn’t actually made of foam, are made entirely of foam layers. We tend to categorize beds into the full foam camp or the hybrid camp, and hybrid beds usually have coils or some kind of innerspring system for support. Speaker 1: While foam beds like this use a dent-supporting foam, in our opinion, foam beds are usually better suited for lighter individuals, not heavy ones. We pretty much recommend it [00:03:30] if you are a heavier person, get a coil mattress as they provide more support and long-term durability. I think the Lumin Leafa mattress is one of the few exceptions to that as it is a thicker burier mattress made entirely of foam layers. I’d probably still look at a hybrid, and you have options with both brands. With Barry you do have the Bear Pro Hybrid, the Bear Star Hybrid and the Barry Lead hybrid. We’ve written a lot about those beds. We link them below in the subscription. The same goes for Safa. You have the Sofa Classic, so HD and the sofa memory foam hybrid. So a lot of hybrid options with both brands, but these two [00:04:00] beds are specifically made entirely of foam layers and that is really the most important thing these beds will have in common. Speaker 1: I’m going to talk about their feel now and we would categorize them both to have a memory foam feel, but there’s quite a bit of difference here that I think we really need to get in on. So the primary comfort layers of both the Bear Original and the Lumen sheet mattress are gel memory foam, and you’ll know for sure that both beds use the memory foam as their primary comfort layers, but one will feel very different from the other. On the Bear Mattress you get that classic [00:04:30] dense feel of memory foam. That’s what you probably expect when you think of a memory foam bed. You lay on it, it feels quite firm, and as the foam beneath you begins to soften and warm, it will conform to the shape of your body and remember it. And if you direct the pressure of the foam, it takes a while for it to pop back into its original shape, which is sort of the calling card of a memory foam on the Lumen Leaf mattress. Speaker 1: On the other hand, you will find that it has a nice quilted European pillowcase, which will offset the feeling of the memory. [00:05:00] foam underneath. You still get that nice body-conforming quality you want from a memory foam, but when you try to rotate between scene positions, it’s much more responsive thanks to that top layer. So I think the memory foam feel on the lime leaf mattress will be universally more comfortable compared to the Bear original. When you go for the original Bear, you really want that classic memory foam feel. I think on the lime leaf mattress, even if you’re not a big fan of memory foam maybe, but your sleeping partner isn’t, you should still be able to get by [00:05:30] on this mattress. Personally, I much prefer the feel of the Lumen sheet mattress compared to the Bear original, but then again, I’m not a big fan of that classic memory foam feel found on the Bear. Speaker 1: Next, let’s compare the firmness levels, and these are also quite similar, but also so different that we have to talk about them. So the original Bear comes in one firmness option, and when we tested it, we found it was about a mid-size on our farm to scale, maybe even a little firmer than that. However, a lot will depend on your body weight, because if you are heavy [00:06:00] person like me, you generally feel beds are a bit softer, and if you are lighter than me, you generally feel beds are a bit firmer. This is just something to keep in mind when looking for mattresses on the internet. The Lumen Leaf mattress, on the other hand, has two different firmness options for you to choose from as you check out. They have a relaxed firm model and a firm model. The relaxed firm model is the most popular. Speaker 1: It’s the one I’d recommend most people go with, and in our test we found that to be around a mid-sized company too, just noticeably a little softer than the bare-bones original, the chunky lumen blade model will be closer to a real company, so a real one [00:06:30] nice option for back and stomach sleepers, but you really have to be looking for a really firm bed to pick up that option. So the relaxed firm and the bare mattress are pretty close, although I’d say the aluminum sheet mattress in the relaxed firm is noticeably a bit softer than the bare original. Then the next really big thing we need to talk about is pricing. There are a few other little X factors I could mention like the sleep recovery technology found in the carrier mattress and then the cooling strip found in the lemon leaf mattress. Speaker 1: I think these are peripheral issues [00:07:00] not worth going into super-sized detail. So let’s talk about the price. I think this will be the big deciding factor for the vast majority of people trying to choose between these two beds. So the original bear becomes a super affordable mattress. Once you factor in discounts, you’re looking at just $650 for a queen size bear mattress, making it one of the most budget-friendly mattresses we’ve tested here. On the other hand, if you look at the lumen leaf mattress, it is much more expensive. You’re looking at around $2100 after discounts for a queen size. So you could get about three bear mattresses for the price of one lumen. Sheet [00:07:30] prices are always subject to change especially for bear as they just revamped their mattress lineup and sometimes prices change when brands do a little redesign. Speaker 1: So make sure you check the description below for what’s current on both beds. But anyway, you can’t avoid that. The lumen sheet mattresses are more than double the price of the original bear. Having tested both beds, I can confidently say that the Lum sheet mattress is better in most ways, but will it be worth the extra price? I can’t really say. If you have the budget for it and you go for the M sheet mattress, I think you will [00:08:00] probably very nice, but if you don’t have that much money to spend on a mattress, then I think the bear makes a lot more sense, because again, the Luna Leaf mattress is about three times the price.
