Blackburn Rovers complete second summer transfer as Gregg Broughton scouting mission pays off

Blackburn Rovers have completed their second summer signing of the transfer window after signing Sondre Tronstad on a three-year deal.

Rovers had already announced the addition of Niall Ennis from Plymouth Argyle on a free transfer and have now taken bolstered their midfield options too. The 27-year-old arrives as a free agent, most recently at Vitesse Arnhem.

The midfielder is described as an all-arounder and can play as a number eight or as a number six. Rovers wanted to add to their midfield ranks after the loan departure of Tyler Morton and have now filled that void.

At 27, Tronstad offers a different age profile in central midfield, to complement the likes of Adam Wharton, John Buckley, Lewis Travis and Jake Garrett.

After helping Vitesse finish fourth in his first season with the club, Tronstad started all 14 of their Europa Conference League games the following season, in which he also played an integral role in them securing a top-six spot in the league. Tronstad made over 100 appearances for Vitesse, scoring nine goals before leaving the club this summer.

Tronstad would have qualified for a work permit in the Championship and therefore does not count towards the four players Rovers can now sign outside of the previous criteria. The FA published their new rules around overseas signings on Wednesday.

Broughton outlined his desire to exploit the European market and Rovers have now done so by adding Tronstad. He becomes their second overseas addition since last summer, following on from Clinton Mola.
