Blaydon Race sees more than 4,500 runners off the mark on 41st anniversary

More than 4,500 racers were on their way this evening, with a celebrity upgrade to one of the Blaydon Race’s most important traditions. The famous race, forever immortalised in the words of Geordie Ridley’s folk song, marked its exciting 41st anniversary this evening with special guests present on Newcastle Quayside.

Among them was Consett-born opera singer Graeme Danby, who led the runners, supporters and spectators alike in a rendition of the famous Blaydon Races folk song. The Blaydon Race Bell was soon after rung, signalling the start of the race across the North East.

The runners then scarpered in style towards the Shibdon Playing Fields finish line in Blaydon, following a six-mile run which has long been a staple of the Tyneside running calendar since its birth in 1981. The race is organised entirely by volunteers from Blaydon Harriers and Athletics Club, coming in at the region’s premier and largest club race.

In excess of 200 volunteers helped out this evening, to make the staple run possible.
