Brilliant photos capture city centre as Liverpool ONE was being built

For some, it’s hard to remember life in Liverpool city centre in the days before the arrival of Liverpool ONE.

But this weekend marks 15 years since the UK’s biggest open-air shopping and leisure complex opened in Liverpool city centre. Officially opening on May 29, 2008, construction was well underway the year prior in 2007.

As part of the Paradise Street Project, now known as Liverpool ONE, the area of Chavasse Park was also redeveloped. It saw the demolition of the old NCP car park, Paradise Street bus station and, of course, the Moat House Hotel, the ECHO previously reported.

To mark the occasion, we’ve delved into the archives to find fascinating photos from the early days of Liverpool ONE when it was under construction. Many were taken by the ECHO’s own snapper Colin Lane and show its buildings and walkways taking shape.

Months later, crowds arrived to shop at a number of new, big brand stores. Here are 14 images that show how this the truly massive project came to dominate the city.
