Bristol City transfers recap: Alex Scott stars for England, Wolves interest, Joe Bryan

Hello and welcome to Friday’s live blog with the Bank Holiday weekend ahead of us and three play-off finals in succession which, in a way, Bristol City have interest across all three.

The Championship encounter between Coventry and Luton for obvious reasons as it sets a pathway for the Robins to follow, the League One match-up between Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley determines one opponent for next season and, finally, the League Two showdown features Paul Simpson’s Carlisle United.

Outside of those games, Alex Scott has been dazzling once again for England U20s with an assist in their 3-2 win over Uruguay which has confirmed their place in the knockout stages of the competition in Argentina with one group game remaining.

City are also busy on the recruitment stakes, confident they’re secured the arrivals of Joe Bryan and Ross McCrorie with a desire for further additions, even at this very early stage of the window.

We’ll be bringing you all the Robins-related news throughout the day, so keep an eye on below for updates

Swans consider Gregg Berhalter

It’s been reported by Wales Online that former United States national team manager Gregg Berhalter appears a candidate being considered by the Swansea City board to take over from Russell Martin.

Martin is set to be appointed at Southampton on a three-year deal and Swansea’s American owners Steve Kaplan and Jason Levien and interested in bringing Berhalter to the Championship.

Berhalter led the United States to the last 16 at the World Cup in Qatar but left in January when his contract expired amid a scandal involving star player Gio Reyna, his mum and a decades-old domestic violence allegation. Which, if you’re interested in, is best explained HERE

Play-off final

Go on then, who’s winning tomorrow?

Plymouth set to lose Ennis

This is a bit of a blow to the newly-promoted Pilgrims as Lancs Live are reporting that Niall Ennis is to undergo a medical at Blackburn Rovers ahead of completing a free transfer to Ewood Park.

Ennis, who scored 14 goals in 45 appearances in all competitions for Plymouth last season, will boost Blackburn’s striking options following the exits of Ben Brereton-Diaz and Bradley Dack.

Julen Lopetegui set for Wolves stay

At least that’s what some reports in Spain are saying.

“What has that got to do with Bristol City?” you very reasonably ask. Well, Alex Scott was a target of Wolves in January and we understand a lot of that was being driven by the manager himself who’s a huge admirer of the Robins midfielder.

A lot still needs to happen in terms of budget and how much Wolves are willing to spend but Lopetegui staying at Molineux does increase the chances of the Premier League club, at the very least, picking up the phone and engaging in talks with City.

If the Spaniard was to leave this summer, it could be a different story altogether. That all being said, from City’s perspective, it’s not as if Scott is going to be short of interest.

Wigan deducted another four points

Sorry, not the Championship as such but more financial chaos elsewhere in the EFL with reports emerging that Wigan Athletic will start next season in League One on -8 points after a second four-point penalty.

The new punishment is due to the club’s owners not depositing cash in time to pay for the latest set of wages.

It’s a sorry, sorry tale at the DW Stadium.

Clear-out at Posh

Having missed out on promotion after being stunned by Sheffield Wednesday’s sensational comeback, Peterborough have put nine players on the transfer list including League One’s leading goalscorer Jonson Clarke-Harris.

  • Josh Knight
  • Jonson Clarke-Harris
  • Oliver Norburn
  • Dan Butler
  • Jeando Fuchs
  • Ben Thompson
  • Joe Tomlinson

England U20 into World Cup knockouts

Ian Foster’s Young Lions still have one more group game to go, against Iraq on Sunday, but they followed their 1-0 win over Tunisia with a 3-2 triumph over a strong Uruguay side on Thursday evening to book their place in the last 16.

City’s Alex Scott once again played 90 minutes in a deeper midfield role and assisted Darko Gyabi for the third with a neat inside pass. Although, in fairness, the Leeds United teenager had to do a lot before he stuck it in the back of the net.

A City legend turns 49

Many Happy Returns, Scotty!

Knows where the goal is

What a brilliant season it was for Tommy Conway. Without that injury, you’d have to think he’d have been approaching 20 goals for the campaign.

He scored 12 goals in all competitions from 46 shots, that’s a very impressive 26 per cent conversion rate. Extrapolate that over a full season and he’d be hitting some serious numbers.
