Carabao Cup first round draw LIVE as Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday learn opponents

Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday learned their Championship fixtures for the upcoming season this morning, and the two sides will now also be in the draw for the first round of the Carabao Cup.

The draw is divided into northern and southern sections so there is plenty of potential for a Yorkshire derby for either side. Other local opposition they could each draw include Barnsley, Bradford City, Doncaster Rovers, Harrogate Town, Hull City, Leeds United, Middlesbrough and Rotherham United.

Join us as we bring you the draw live as it happens, with the balls currently scheduled to be drawn starting from around 2:30pm.

Last season

Huddersfield Town went out in the first round last year, with Danny Schofield naming a pretty strong side at home to Preston North End only to see them fall to a 1-4 home defeat. The visitors were three goals ahead inside half an hour in an abject showing.

Sheffield Wednesday had a far better time of it, getting some measure of vindication with a 2-0 win against a newly-promoted Sunderland side who had knocked them out of the play-offs just a few months prior. A 3-0 win over Rochdale followed in the second round, but they were eliminated on penalties in the third round after a brave showing with a 1-1 draw away to then-Premier League outfit Southampton.

Some interesting possibilities

If you want the chance to see some celebrities and be on telly then you probably want the trip to Wrexham, who are back in League Two following their promotion to the National League.

Leeds United are also back in the draw after their Premier League stay came to an end and would be tasty for either Town or Wednesday, while a repeat of last month’s League One play-off final against Barnsley would be a fun one for the Owls.

Town and Wednesday could always draw each other, of course, and indeed did so at this stage of the competition in 2021. Huddersfield won on a penalty shootout after a goalless draw on that occasion.
