Celebrating new low-cost homes

Celebrating new low-cost homes

Celebrations were held last week to mark the completion of 104 council-rented and shared ownership homes at Clarendon Place, and 42 council-rented homes in Victoria Road.

The Clarendon Place homes are the first delivered through the council’s Homes for Brighton & Hove partnership with affordable housing provider, the Hyde Group.

The development of 104 one, 2 and 3-bedroom flats includes 49 council-rented homes in Quay View and 55 shared ownership homes available through Hyde in Harbour View.

The council-rented homes are being let at truly affordable social rents to people on the council’s housing register.

The flats are highly energy efficient which will help keep residents’ energy bills low, and there’s also a car club and bicycle share scheme.

Located off Wellington Road in Portslade, over-looking Shoreham Harbour, the homes have good public transport links and are close to bus stops and train stations.

The development has also enabled improvements to the local area, including a new pedestrian link and green corridor.

Councillor Gill Williams, chair of the Housing & New Homes Committee, said: “I’m incredibly excited to see these high-quality new homes. It’s impressive to see the transformation and it’s lovely to see people really enjoying living here.

“Homes for Brighton & Hove is a great example of partnership working, allowing both organisations to pool their resources and expertise to deliver new, genuinely affordable housing for local people in the city.

“With the national housing crisis having a huge impact on people in Brighton & Hove, we desperately need these affordable homes. I’ll be delighted to see many more of them.”

Guy Slocombe, Hyde’s Chief Investment Officer, said: “This is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when organisations who are committed to improving the lives of local people work together as we have here as Homes for Brighton & Hove.

“Clarendon Place is not just supporting people by providing new affordable homes, its construction has created jobs through a local contractor, PMC, and, through its apprenticeship scheme, PMC is helping people to develop skills and get experience in the building industry.”

Homes for Brighton & Hove

Homes for Brighton & Hove was set up to provide much needed low-cost homes for people in the city and is an important part of the council’s ambitious programmes to build new council homes.

The partnership is also building 242 low-cost homes in Coldean, which include a further 127 council-rented homes. The Coldean development is due to be completed later this year.

New council homes in Victoria Road

Leader of the Council, Councillor Bella Sankey, joined fellow councillors and building partners Morgan Sindall at an event to welcome residents to 42 new council homes in Jay Court and Perching Court.

Residents began moving in to the new homes in Victoria Road, Portslade in April.

Designed by the council’s in-house architect team, the homes are a mix of one, 2 and 3 bedroom flats.

It’s our most sustainable new council housing scheme to date, with a ground source heat pump system, solar panels, planted ‘living’ walls, and a landscaped communal garden.

Councillor Sankey said: “I’m so pleased to celebrate these fantastic new council homes. It’s a brilliant development and an amazing space. I hope everyone will be very happy living here.

“As well as helping meet our desperate need for more council homes in the city, it’s built with sustainability in mind. It’s a low carbon construction and the homes were designed to be energy efficient to help reduce residents’ bills. More sustainable house building is a priority for us going forward.”

The development is one of the largest completed so far in our New Homes for Neighbourhoods building programme, providing much-needed new council homes for rent on council-owned land across the city.
