David Raya, Diogo Costa and the goalkeepers who could become Hugo Lloris’ Tottenham successor
Tottenham look increasingly likely to have a new No.1 in goal next season after Hugo Lloris admitted that he has “desires for other things”. Joining from Lyon in the summer of 2012, the World Cup winner appears on course to leave for a new challenge elsewhere ahead of the new campaign, providing of course that Tottenham do give him the green light to exit as he still does have a year remaining on his contract.
“We are coming to an important moment, whether for the club or for me. It’s the end of an era. I have desires for other things,” he said in an interview with French media outlet Nice-Matin.
“I will ask myself quietly to study what will be possible. But I don’t forget that I still have a year of contract with Tottenham and that in football it is always difficult to predict what will happen. What is essential at the moment is to recover well from my injury. I’m on vacation but I continue to talk and do my training. My goal is to be on top in July, then we’ll see what the future holds for me.”

A departure would signal the end of an era for both player and club after serving the Lilywhites so well in his 11 years in north London. Saving the team a number of occasions in past, the 36-year-old had to contend with a couple of injuries last campaign and his form suffered at various points with some notable errors creeping into his game.
Given the need to bring in a long-term replacement for him due to his age and his dip in form, football.london previously reported that the club were looking at bringing in a new goalkeeper this summer. So who exactly could Tottenham target to take on Lloris’ gloves ahead of the 2023/24 season? football.london takes a look at six options below.
David Raya
Age: 27
Club: Brentford
Raya also looks on course to be on the move this summer as he will soon enter the final 12 months of his Brentford contract. The Bees have moved quickly to sign Mark Flekken from German side Freiburg, thus paving the way for their current No.1 to head elsewhere for a new challenge if a club can meet their valuation of the player.
The goalkeeper has made quite a name for himself in the Premier League since helping Brentford gain promotion and he demonstrated in his recent appearance against Spurs why he can be Lloris’ long-term successor. Denying Richarlison with two excellent saves late on in the contest, the Spain international also displayed his excellent passing qualities with a range of long and short balls.
Raya is so impressive with his feet that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp even admitted that he could even “wear the No,10 shirt” after creating a handful of attacks with his passing during Brentford’s draw against the Reds in September 2021. A move for Raya would also help Spurs’ homegrown numbers in the process as he is classed as homegrown after joining Blackburn Rovers as a 16-year-old.
Robert Sanchez
Age: 25
Club: Brighton & Hove Albion
Sanchez could also find himself playing for a new club next season after falling out of favour under Roberto De Zerbi. Starting the term in goal before losing his place to Jason Steele, the Spain international was completely left out of the matchday squad in the Seagulls’ final five league games of the campaign.
A big presence between the sticks, the Cartagena-born player is very good at claiming corners and he is also an impressive shot-stopper. His footwork and distribution of the ball is also excellent, which is something Spurs have crucially missed in recent seasons with Lloris rather shaky with the ball at his feet.
If he is to exit this summer after falling out of favour at the Amex, the south coast side will still want big money for their man as Transfermarkt value him at £27.5million. Sanchez is also classed as a homegrown player after initially joining Brighton as a youngster back in 2013.
Jordan Pickford
Age: 29
Club: Everton
Another homegrown player Tottenham could target ahead of the new season is Everton ace Pickford. Whereas a summer exit would have come to fruition if Everton had lost their Premier League status one week ago, the player, who penned a new long-term contract in February, could possibly now be set to remain on Merseyside as the Toffees look to move forward as a club.
If Tottenham do decide to move for him, however, they would be signing a player who has a wealth of experience for club and country. A commanding and vocal presence on the pitch, the 29-year-old would cost a sizeable fee after extending his deal until the end of June 2027.
Giorgi Mamardashvili
Age: 22
Club: Valencia
Mamardashvili has been linked with a host of Premier League clubs, including Tottenham, Manchester United and Chelsea, in recent months after earning rave reviews for his performances for Valencia. In a perilous position not so long ago towards the bottom of the La Liga table, Los Che have moved away from the relegation zone recently with their shot-stopper helping them to some key results.
The 22-year-old is someone that Tottenham have been tracking for a couple of seasons as one for the future. Although penning a new long-term deal until 2027 in September, with a reported €100million (£88million) release clause, the Georgian, who Transfermarkt value at £21.5million, could exit ahead of the summer transfer deadline as his club may find themselves in a position where they must bring in the money due to their financial problems.
The 6ft 4ins goalkeeper has also the qualities and attributes to have a huge future in the game and he could be Tottenham’s No.1 for years to come if they decide to go for him.
Andre Onana
Age: 27
Club: Inter Milan
Linked with a transfer to Tottenham in the past when he was with Ajax, could this be the summer the Lilywhites get their hands on Onana? The former Cameroon goalkeeper only joined Inter Milan 12 months ago but clubs such as Spurs, Chelsea and Manchester United have been linked with the 27-year-old.
A player with bags of experience in the game after making his name in the Netherlands with Ajax, Onana could potentially end his time at the San Siro with a Champions League winners’ medal as the Italian giants take on Man City in the showpiece finale next weekend. If he is to leave Inter after only 12 months in Milan, the Nerazzurri would make an instant profit on the player as he joined on a free transfer.
A very good shot stopper, Onana is comfortable with the ball at his feet and capable of pulling off a whole range of different passes as he looks to build from the back.
Diogo Costa
Age: 23
Club: Porto
Another young, up-and-coming goalkeeper who looks on course to have an incredibly bright future is Porto ace Costa. The 23-year-old has enjoyed a fine season in Portugal, conceding just 30 goals in 41 appearances and keeping a total of 20 clean sheets in the process.
Now Portugal’s No.1, Costa has been mentioned in regards to a summer switch to Manchester United. Reports have suggested that Porto are not expected to part with their goalkeeper for anything less than his £64million release clause, however.
Another who is excellent with the ball and capable of starting up attacks with his passing, he is also commanding in his area and a great shot stopper. He ticks plenty of boxes for Tottenham, although his valuation could prove tricky unless they can drive the price right down.
