Entrepreneur developing lifesaving drugs wins top honour at Federation of Small Businesses awards

A young entrepreneur who is developing life-saving drug treatments while herself undergoing treatment for a rare cancer has won a national honour.

Dr Kirsty Smitten, 28, was named Entrepreneur of the Year 2023 by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) at its Celebrating Small Business Awards.

Other winners at the FSB event included an innovative pet natural wellbeing business, an IT recycler and a family-run care home.

Kirsty is CEO of Sheffield drug development spin-out business, MetalloBio, which is developing antimicrobial platform technology to both prevent and treat antimicrobial-resistant infections.

She founded MetalloBio after completing her PhD at the University of Sheffield and has already raised over £1m in grant funding and £1m in equity investment for the business.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) happens when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites build up resistance to existing medicines, meaning those treatments become less effective. AMR is estimated to be responsible for more than a million deaths globally each year.
