Fabrizio Romano confirms Liverpool in for signing of Man Utd target despite concerns he’s ‘not good enough’

Fabrizio Romano declared Liverpool “will be there” in the event the greenlight is given to signing a player also wanted by Man Utd, though doubts have been cast over whether he’s of the standard required.

With Arthur Melo, James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all confirmed to be leaving Liverpool at season’s end, a midfield rebuild is now essential.

Alexis Mac Allister is shaping up to be the first major name arriving at Anfield. Trusted Argentine reporter, Gaston Edul, delivered the goods on that front on Saturday afternoon.

Among the numerous other midfielders Liverpool have cast their eye over since pulling the plug on Jude Bellingham is Ryan Gravenberch.

The Netherlands international joined Bayern Munich from Ajax for around £16m last summer. However, his maiden campaign in Bavaria has not gone as planned.

Gravenberch has struggled to displace either of Joshua Kimmich or Leon Goretzka in the engine room. With Konrad Laimer due to arrive from RB Leipzig too, Gravenberch’s situation is unlikely to improve next season.

Sky Sports claimed Liverpool had made a ‘strong pitch’ to Gravenberch and his camp back that was warmly received back in April. The Reds are seemingly prepared to sign the player either on loan with an option to buy, or via a permanent deal.

Man Utd too have been linked and their interest dates back to the winter window.

Indeed, Sky Sports reported Gravenberch was actually Erik ten Hag’s favoured midfield option ahead of Marcel Sabitzer when Christian Eriksen’s untimely ankle injury forced United into the loan market on deadline day.

Reports out of Germany have repeatedly stressed Bayern do not wish to part ways with Gravenberch just one year after his arrival. However, according to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool “will be there” in the event there’s a change of heart.

Romano told Give Me Sport: “They don’t want to negotiate at this stage, so if at some point this summer, Bayern will decide to put him on the market and to negotiate, Liverpool will be there for sure.

“Otherwise, I think it’s going to be complicated because, as of today, Bayern have no intention of opening talks.”

Gravenberch not good enough for Liverpool?

But while Liverpool seem intent on forging a move if they are able, Ryan Taylor of the Daily Express isn’t so sure Gravenberch would improve the Reds.

Speaking to GMS back in April when links to Gravenberch first arose, Taylor said: “My argument would be, if he’s not good enough for Bayern Munich, why should he be good enough for Liverpool at the moment?

“I know he’s a top young player, but I’m very much of the opinion that Bayern aren’t streets ahead of Liverpool at the moment.

“I know Liverpool have had an awful season. I still feel like, come next season, Liverpool will probably be as good as Bayern and ultimately, if Gravenberch isn’t deemed capable of getting into that team at the moment, then I do question whether he can get into Liverpool’s team.”
