Fankaty Dabo message sent as Coventry City announce retained list

Coventry City defender Fankaty Dabo has received a huge amount of support from Sky Blues fans after it was announced he was among the players to be released.

Mark Robins’ side narrowly missed out on a place in the Premier League next season after losing on penalties to Luton in the Championship play-off final on Saturday.

And just a few days after suffering heartbreak at Wembley, Coventry have announced the players who will be leaving the West Midlands club with the unlucky player to miss in the shootout, Fankaty Dabo, among those released.

The 27-year-old was racially abused in the wake of his missed penalty with the club offering their “support” to Dabo as they now work with the PFA, EFL and police to catch the perpetrators. They will ban and prosecute any individuals identified as sending them.

A statement on the club’s official website confirmed that Dabo, Julien Dacosta, Todd Kane, Sean Maguire, Michael Rose, Martyn Waghorn and Tyler Walker will all leave the club following the conclusion of their contracts.

Jaja87: Hopefully this is a positive sign from Doug King and the recruitment team. Would like to think they would only release players if they plan to replace with better versions.

SkyblueEw: Shame really for Dabo and Rose because at least they did give their all for club. Decent when fit. Sad to read in another story about the moronic racist abuse Dabo has received. You are not fit to support our club and we certainly don’t want you, not proper fans.

ccf: No surprise with any of them, wish them all well in their careers , especially Rose and Dabo. Dabo, hold your head up son. We win together and we lose together, and you will always be a Sky Blue at heart.

Henergy: It’s a shame for Fanky but injuries have just overtaken him. Such a horrendous way for it all to end. Rosey I would have kept and played more, but I suspect he’d already communicated his desire to leave after being left out the team for so long. Good luck to them both. I’ve got a feeling Rosey in particular will go on to good things.

Mungers: Not sure Rose did too much wrong when he got his chances. Feel for Dabo, never came back fully after his injuries. We’re going to be looking at bringing in about 8 defenders and that’s before potential holes in our strikers and midfield emerge. Some re-building job to do.

Scotty69: Blimey, we only have one senior centre back at the club, so really surprised Rose has been released. Dabo has struggled with injury, but would be useful within the squad. He can still do a shift when required. As far as the racist comments towards him, I just despair. Mindless cowards, nothing further to say.

mulcaky: So four defenders are sent back to their parent club and we release two more defenders. Hope MR has got a plan B.
