Frankie Dettori on Prosperous Voyage for more Royal Ascot glory

Frankie Dettori on Prosperous Voyage for more Royal Ascot glory

15:40 Duke of Cambridge Stakes (Group 2) (1 mile)

The second day of the Royal meeting starts with a race involving 28 two-year-old runners, so if you imagine a similar number of toddlers racing over 100 metres, that’s not a betting race for me!

Second race has only had two previous runnings so does not have enough history to carry out a trends analysis, which means we look at the third race of the day – the Duke of Cambridge Stakes, which is a Group 2 race for fillies and mares.

Market leaders tend to do well here, with last year’s 5/2 winner Saffron Beach the third winning favourite in the last seven renewals (although 22/1 shot Indie Angel won the year before).

Planet Sport Bet: Money Back if 2nd to SP favourite in all Royal Ascot races

I have used the trends below to reduce the field from the ten declared runners at the 48-hour stage:

  • 18/19 – Had won over a mile or more

  • 17/19 – Had at least one previous run that season

  • 16/19 – Won by a four-year-old

  • 15/19 – Finished in the top three last time out

  • 15/19 – Had won a Group 3 or better race before

  • 12/19 – Had run at Ascot before

  • 12/19 – Favourites that were placed

  •   7/19 – Had won at Ascot before

  •   6/19 – Returned a double-figure price

  •   6/19 – Winning favourites (1 co-fav)

  •   5/19 – Owned by Cheveley Park Stud

  •   4/19 – Trained by Sir Michael Stoute

  •   4/19 – Ran at Epsom last time out

  •   4/19 – Trained by John Gosden (3 of the last 11 and 2 of last 3)

  •   2/19 – Won by trainer James Fanshawe

  •   2/19 – Winners from stall 1

  • Only 5 placed horses (2 winners) from stall 1 in the last 19 runnings.

From those stats I was left with a shortlist of three runners, which are: Prosperous Voyage, Jumbly and Rogue Millennium.

Suggested bet: Prosperous Voyage each-way in the 15:40 at Royal Ascot

Prosperous Voyage has won at both Group 1 and Group 3 level and that makes her a real player in this race, although she disappointed behind Inspiral here last season finishing tenth of twelve runners in the Coronation Stakes.

The fact she disappointed on this course is the only negative against her and Frankie Dettori’s booking may negate that – the popular Italian has ridden on both runs this season, including winning at Group 3 level last time at Epsom.

Jumbly is a course-and-distance winner and was second in a Group 2 last time out on his debut for Joseph O’Brien at the Curragh.

Ryan Moore takes the ride here and I am sure that Jumbly will be in the mix at the finish. However, she does need to find seven pounds of improvement to match Prosperous Voyage’s official rating of 112 and that is a huge ask which probably needs her rival to put in a sub-par performance.

Rogue Millenium ran well last time to finish second in a Group 2 race, but two negatives rule her out: she has not won above Listed level and her best form is all over further.

It is a very close call between Jumby and Prosperous Voyage, but I am going for a win bet on Prosperous Voyage to add to Frankie Dettori’s list of Royal Ascot winners.

Suggested bet: Prosperous Voyage each-way in the 15:40 at Royal Ascot
