Have Luton Town ever been in the Premier League? Hatters one game away from the top-flight after incredible Championship campaign

Luton Town have endured many ups and downs throughout their history and are now just one step away from playing in the Premier League.

The Hatters overcame Sunderland 3-2 on aggregate in the Championship play-off semi-finals to set up a huge one-off game against Coventry City.

Luton produced a fabulous home display to beat Sunderland 2-0 and seal a place at Wembley

Luton have been to hell and back over the past 30 years but are close to the promised land.

It’s been a remarkable rise for the club, and no matter what happens from here, it’s been a season to savour.

However, the top-flight is now within reach.

Have Luton ever played in the Premier League?

Since the Premier League’s inception in 1992, Luton have never been involved.

The Hatters were relegated from the old First Division in the 1991/92 campaign, meaning they missed out on the inaugural campaign by a matter of months.

And since that year, they have never been close to playing in England’s top-flight.

They were relegated to what is now League One in 1996, where they remained until 2001 before dropping into League Two.

The Hatters then enjoyed a resurgence as they made it back up to the Championship in 2005 and finished tenth in the 2005/06 campaign.

However, that was as good as it got for Luton, and they suffered three straight relegations to end up in the National League in 2009.

There they remained until 2014, when Luton finally won the league, with a young Andre Gray leading the line.

The first two seasons in League Two saw the Hatters finish in the top half before Nathan Jones arrived.

The Welshman propelled Luton into League One before departing and returning once they were in the Championship, and they have been in the second tier of English football ever since.

This means it is 31 years since the Hatters last played in the top-flight of English football.

They made the play-offs last season, only miss out on a trip to Wembley by losing to Huddersfield.

But under Rob Edwards, things are different, and they head to north London with an excellent chance of making it to the Premier League for the first time.

Speaking after the win over Sunderland, Edwards said: “We’re one game away from the Premier League. It sounds special, it sounds surreal saying it.

“We are, it’s a fact. And I’m really, really happy.

“The fans were great, and we needed them. They got the atmosphere going before kick-off. When the staff came in after the warm-up they said the atmosphere was really, really good.

“We were just glad we were able to repay them with a good performance.

“If we didn’t believe after being 2-1 down and being right in the game, then what’s the point?

“We believed from day one that we could achieve something. We’ve got one more game to go to try to do it, I’m not getting carried away.

“I’m really proud and want everyone to enjoy the moment of winning a semi-final.

“We’re going to go to Wembley for a day out and it’ll be really special.”

After a tumultuous time since Luton were last relegated from the top-flight, they are now just one game away from making history and bringing Premier League football to Kenilworth Road for the first time.
