‘I love it here’: 11-goal Sheffield Wednesday star is desperate to stay at Hillsborough

Sheffield Wednesday striker Lee Gregory is desperate to secure an extension to his contract at Hillsborough. The 34-year-old assisted the winning goal for Josh Windass as the Owls won promotion at Wembley on Monday.

Now, in an interview with Yorkshire Live, the talisman has opened up on his future. Gregory will be out of contract this summer and it’s now up to Wednesday to offer him fresh terms at the club.

The experienced performer has been a decent addition to Darren Moore’s ranks. During 2022/23 he’s scored 11 goals, with his most important arguably coming in the second leg of the play-off semi-final against Peterborough.

Gregory will be 35 shortly after the EFL season gets underway. The player is still hopeful he will get the chance to stay at Wednesday, however, and would jump at the chance to re-sign with the Owls.

Why Chelsea FINALLY Turned A Corner.

He told Yorkshire Live: “Another year by the way, please! I would love to stay. I love it here. Unfortunately, it’s not up to me. If it was then I’d have been signed ages ago. Hopefully, I can get something sorted so we’ll see.”

Gregory has been with Wednesday since August 2021. He signed from Stoke City and has helped himself to 28 goals from 86 appearances during his time playing in the famous blue and white.

Gregory desperate to extend Wednesday contract and the club should act

We’ve said on these pages before that Gregory deserves a new deal. He doesn’t only score goals but with six assists this season, it’s clear that he also helps create goals for his teammates.

Gregory isn’t getting any younger. It’s perhaps a concern that he’s going to be 35 in the summer but with Wednesday set to embark on a Championship campaign, the striker could prove useful.

One more year would surely be enough to get Gregory to sign. That might just take him to the end of his career and seeing the talismanic striker remain at the club would surely delight the club’s fan base.
