Incident blocks A456 near Hagley amid 999 response

One of the busiest roads into Birmingham was blocked tonight causing traffic chaos for commuters. The A456 dual carriageway between Hagley and Clent Hills Island was brought to a standstill this evening (June 21).

Our reporter on the scene said it appeared there had been two separate incidents within yards of each another. It’s not currently known if anybody has been injured.

Traffic management system Inrix said: “A456 Hagley Causeway Eastbound is closed due to an accident between Wassell Grove Lane and Hagley Wood Lane. Traffic is coping well. The sensors show that the road is now closed to assist. Affecting traffic heading away from Hagley towards Halesowen.”

Pictures by BirminghamLive show all three branches of the emergency services in attendance on the road – where there are currently roadworks in place. It’s thought disruption began sometime around 6pm.

Our reporter on the scene said she had seen medics depart in an ambulance. She said: “Looks like multiple vehicles involved. There are two ambulances at the scene now and two have been and left.

“Tow trucks and cops are also on the scene with one fire engine. People are sat on the roadside with cars queueing back. It’s on the Birmingham bound side of the A456 dual carriageway on the approach to Clent Hills island.”

Our reporter was later told by emergency workers on the scene they were dealing with two separate incidents in “close succession”. That was thought to be the reason behind the large emergency response.
