Jobs at major fish firm set to be moved from Grimsby to Fraserburgh

A number of jobs at a major fish firm are set to be relocated to Fraserburgh after it was announced the company would be closing down their Grimsby factory.

The Marsden Road site is owned by Young’s and is predominantly used to produce whitefish products, with plans also set to see what’s left of the factory moved to their Humberstone Road site in the town, Grimsby Live reports.

In total 285 jobs have been placed at risk, with the firm’s owners Sofina Foods Europe stating they will be aiming to maintain production at the site until October. It is currently unknown how many workers will be relocated to the Aberdeenshire site.

A consultation period will now be carried out with staff as soon as is practicable, with new roles at the Humberstone Road and Fraserburgh sites to support employees transfers within the business. The company emphasised their staff’s hard work, saying they are a ‘credit’ to the company.

In a statement, a spokesperson said: “Following changes in future demands for products produced at our Marsden Road site, the Company has explored a number of options to try and maintain production at the site from October 2023.

“It is with regret that we have been unable to find any viable solutions and therefore today are announcing the proposal to move the remaining whitefish processing undertaken at the Marsden Road site to the Humberstone Road site in Grimsby and the smoked processing to their Fraserburgh site in Scotland.
