Kidlington market trader accused of selling counterfeit tobacco

Michael Addison, 63, of Portland Place, Cheltenham, is also accused of laundering £300,000 through a Lloyds bank account between 2016 and last year.

Oxfordshire County Council’s trading standards team claims he was responsible for selling counterfeit versions of Richmond and Lambert and Butler cigarettes and Golden Virginia hand rolling tobacco in 2021 and 2022.

Prosecutor Michael Forster told Oxford Magistrates’ Court that Addison had allegedly been caught with a ‘large quantity’ of cigarettes and cash in February.

Appearing before the district judge on Friday (June 2), Addison gave no indication of his pleas to seven charges of supplying a tobacco product in breach of packaging regulations, a further three allegations of selling goods bearing a sign likely to be mistaken for a registered trademark and two counts of money laundering.

District Judge Kamlesh Rana bailed Addison to appear before Oxford Crown Court on July 6 for a plea and trial preparation hearing.

He was represented at Friday’s hearing by Leanne Ballato.
