Lancashire schools closed today due to flooding after more storms hit region

Several schools have announced they are shut today (June 20) after torrential rain hit the region.

Schools in Preston and Chorley will close to some or all pupils after they were flooded. It comes after more flash foods were reported on Monday evening leaving roads closed or damaged.

Chorley Police reported that Horrobin Lane in Rivington was closed due to flooding while the road surface on Branch Road near the A666 in Blackburn was also left damaged and a partial road closure put in place. Lancashire County Council has now announced schools have been affected by the adverse weather conditions.

English Martyrs Catholic Primary School, in Preston, is closed on Tuesday (June 20) after flooding left the school without power. The school on Sizer Street was also closed yesterday for the same reason.

The LCC website said: “Flood, No Electricity, Following school closure on 19.06.23, the situation has not yet been rectified and Electricity NorthWest are not able to guarantee power for 20.06.23.

“The decision was made at 345pm on 19.06.23 by Headteacher and Chair of Governors to close on 20.06.23 so that timely notice was given to parents needing alternative child care. Work for pupils has been set on Purple Mash for remote learning and check ins with vulnerable pupils will be made.”
