Mark Lawrenson thinks that Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher should be looking to leave the club this summer in search of first-team football.

Alisson Becker is Liverpool’s undisputed number one. Despite the Reds’ struggles this season, the Brazilian has had another fine season himself.

Kelleher has only featured for Liverpool sparingly, making just four appearances across all competitions this season.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper is reportedly ready to leave the club this summer as he looks to make the next step in his career.

Mark Lawrenson thinks that it would be the right decision for Kelleher to leave. The goalkeepers only Premier League match this season came on the final day against Southampton in a 4-4 draw.

“He wasn’t good was he at Southampton?” Lawrenson told Off The Ball. “He actually looked really, really rusty but as you rightly say he needs to play.

“I wonder whether because they’re obviously trying to buy players Liverpool and they’re talking about him being £20m-odd, whether they might just sell him rather than letting him go out on loan.

“That will be an interesting one most definitely. You saw him last week and you think, you need to be playing, wherever it is you just need to be playing.”

The 24-year-old is at a stage of his career where he needs to be playing regular first team football. Throughout his career so far he has only made 21 senior appearances.

Despite the player looking for an exit route, Jurgen Klopp has stated that it would take a “extraordinary” offer to see him leave this summer.

“I can’t see honestly, I can’t see Caoimh leaving,” Klopp told the club website. “It must be an extraordinary offer that I start thinking, I have to say.”

Liverpool have done well in the past to secure huge sums for their youth prospects. They have sold the likes of Rhian Brewster, Dominic Solanke and Jordon Ibe for large sums in the past.

It is understandable that Liverpool will be looking to get as much as possible for Kelleher, but a move seems the best for both parties.

Republic of Ireland boss Stephen Kenny thinks that a move away from Liverpool would be good for him this summer.

“It looks like he will be on the move this summer, and it can only benefit him because he needs to play games,” Kenny told reporters.

“He has been starved of games this year and that has been a problem for him.”
