Liverpool summer transfer rebuild with two players no longer guaranteed starters and six more potential exits

Liverpool summer transfer rebuild with two players no longer guaranteed starters and six more potential exits

A vitally important summer of rebuilding is fast approaching Liverpool.

With new sporting director Jorg Schmadtke now on board to begin what is, currently, a short-term agreement with the Reds, attention has now turned to just what the club will do when the transfer window opens later this month.

Alexis Mac Allister of Brighton remains a priority although speculation that Manchester United are winning the race for Mason Mount has ramped up in recent days.

Manu Kone, of Borussia Monchengladbach and OGC Nice’s Kephren Thruam are two who have been linked this week, although Liverpool are not interested in Sporting’s Manuel Ugarte.

Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch is another who is being looked at by those who matter at Liverpool and the Reds are keen to conclude their business sooner rather than later as a hugely important pre-season period awaits them next month.

Liverpool have lost five members of last season’s squad now that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner, Naby Keita, Roberto Firmino and Arthur Melo have all been waved off but there are still some within the ranks whose futures are also the subject of speculation.

Here, the ECHO assesses the lay of land within the squad and looks at the future of each member of the Liverpool squad.

One of the few performers whose levels stayed at an impeccable level last season. Liverpool have several issues to resolve within the team this summer but their goalkeeper is not one of them. The Brazil international will eventually go down alongside some of the all-time greats at the club.

The West Derby-born defender was rejuvenated by the tactical tweak in April that effectively sees him now play as a midfielder when Liverpool have possession. He is going nowhere but contracts talks might be useful given his current terms expire in 2025.

France international was hampered by injuries across a lot of last season and he was restricted to just 11 Premier League appearances as a result. A full and uninterrupted summer should help on that score going forward. He is vital to the long-term cause.

Van Dijk was not at his imperious best for all of last season but his good form did get overlooked at times. A major part of the team that went 11 unbeaten in the final two months of the campaign. Will be imperative for Liverpool if they are to win more silverware under Jurgen Klopp.

Has been linked, curiously, with a move to Real Madrid of late. The Spanish side are reportedly lining up a bid of around £40m but it would be a major shock to see the Scotland captain leave. Still an integral part of the team at 29.

Fabinho is facing the biggest test of his Liverpool career next season as Klopp gets ready for a midfield overhaul. A significant dip in form has left many questioning his long-term suitability but it would be a surprise to see the Brazilian move on, even if he may not be a guaranteed starter going forward.

Another whose ‘starting’ status is set to come under considerable pressure. The Liverpool captain will likely be used more sparingly next term if the Reds conclude the sort of business they are eager to. Will still have a part to play, however, even if he is not clocking up 40-plus appearances.

Thiago’s contract expires in the summer of 2024 but there might be a feeling that the former Barcelona man is more useful to the club for another season rather than seeking to cash in this window. Midfield reinforcements will decrease the injury risk meaning he could be given a new lease of life next term.

Elliott enjoyed the best run of his professional career to date by making 46 appearances across all competitions. Another who will benefit from midfield additions easing the workload.

Jones has played himself back into the thinking of Klopp with a superb end-of-season run that saw him feature in all 11 of the unbeaten run in the final two months of the campaign. Might have had questions marks over his future before that period but will be considered a viable option going forward.

Teenage midfielder is unlikely to be loaned out this summer given his startling rise from youth ranks to the first term last season. An injury he picked up in March ended his season prematurely but Bajcetic will be very much considered part of the first team set-up going forward.

Another 30-goal campaign from Liverpool’s main man. He made a mockery of those early-season questions over the club’s decision to hand him the biggest ever contract at Anfield. He will be vital to any future success.

January signing promised much in his relatively short cameo as a Liverpool player and the Netherlands international has shown more than enough to believe that he will be a fine addition to the forward line.

Fifteen goals in his debut season more than hints at a potential star in Nunez but defensive work needs improving and his linguistic skills have to develop, Klopp says. Faces huge competition now for a starting berth but has an almost unique skillset that can be used effectively by his manager next season. A rough diamond who has a lot of potential.

How Liverpool missed their Portugal international last season. Between a hamstring complaint and a serious calf problem, Jota missed around six months of action in total. Still managed to end the season with seven goals, though. He may be able to lay claim to being Liverpool’s sharpest finisher. Could be a huge player for Klopp next season.

A serious knee injury in October virtually wrecked the Colombian international’s season but a strong summer can help get him back to the levels he showed when he first joined in the second half of the 2021/22 term when he lit up the place.

Kelleher’s future will come under question this summer. Klopp insists it will take “an extraordinary offer” to entice Liverpool into selling but he is one of their few assets who could fetch a considerable sum to bolster the existing transfer kitty. Will be sure to have interested parties but if Klopp is keen to keep the Irishman around, a lot will depend on his own wishes.

A new contract signed last summer suggests his long-term future is firmly at Liverpool but his performances dipped considerably last term and he hasn’t been at his best for three years, which, in fairness, is down to a whole host of factors. Still just 26, however, there is more than enough time for Gomez to rediscover those 2019/20 levels of form but might he fetch a decent sum if Liverpool want to cash in? One to watch.

Another centre-back who is now firmly behind the established partnership of Konate and Van Dijk, it will be interesting to see what happens with Matip’s future. He will be 32 when the new season starts and there are doubts over whether a sale would be worth it for the sort of fee he would attract.

Tsimikas could yet be someone who moves on this summer. The Greek defender is firmly behind Robertson in the pecking order and the new change of system perhaps limits the need for specialist left-backs in the squad. His teary-eyed reaction during the end-of-season lap of honour at Anfield was revealing. Expect interest to manifest over the summer months.

Williams is well liked at Liverpool but hasn’t made a senior appearance for the last two seasons. Loans at Swansea and Blackpool were inconclusive and it remains to be seen how much the Reds might value the young centre-back at.

Liverpool have been entertaining interest in Phillips for the last few years but have consistently been forced to drop their asking price for the centre-back. A £7m bid was rejected in January but teams will definitely come back to the table for Phillips, who is way down the pecking order at Anfield. The main question is whether or not the Reds will be able to bank the sort of sum they are hoping for.

23 of 27

Ramsay’s season was injury-hit and the young right-back made just one senior appearance, against Derby in the Carabao Cup in November. Most definitely one for the future at Anfield but that could involve a loan deal before then.

24 of 27

Liverpool don’t want to lose Carvalho on a permanent transfer this summer but the young attacker is wanted by a host of clubs on loan. The Reds are ready to assess the merits of each of those in the coming weeks, although any permanent offers would have been on the higher side to even tempt the club into looking closer. Expect a loan switch at some stage.

25 of 27

Adrian is likely to sign a new contract at Liverpool. The veteran is now third choice at Anfield and while Kelleher could attract strong interest, Adrian is a popular member of the squad who it appears is keen to stay put.

Doak has been something of a revelation this season, making five senior appearances for the Reds in total. Still just 17, though, it might be too soon for even a loan deal as Liverpool continue to monitor his progress closely. A short-term switch to a more unforgiving environment further down the leagues might be side-stepped by the club for now.

Sepp van den Berg will return from his loan switch to Schalke. At the age of 21, it will be interesting to see how his next move is handled. Liverpool are unlikely to receive anything substantial in the way of a permanent deal, so another loan could be in the offing.
