Local trio finishes top three in pro fishing tournament at Lake Champlain

Plattsburgh, New York, natives Brett Carnright and Ryan Latinville earn first and second, while Hinesburg, Vermont, native Bryan Labelle finishes third

A rainy and wet day in Plattsburgh led to multiple positives for a few of our region’s local professional fishermen. Plattsburgh, New York, natives Brett Carnright and Ryan Latinville took the top two spots in the Major League Fishing Toyota Series North Division tournament at Lake Champlain. Hinesburg, Vermont, native Bryan Labelle followed not too far behind with a third-place finish. The tournament, taking place right at Plattsburgh City Marina, drew a large local crowd of friends and family to cheer on the local competitors. It’s a group that Carnright truly appreciates having his back, bringing him up through the hard times of finishing second and fourth in the same tournament before finally reaching the top. “It was amazing,” Carnright said. “I had a ton of family and friends show out– they mean a lot to me; it’s been a long road to get here … to actually get it done feels amazing.”Carnright earned $90,500 in cash prizes with an extra $35,000 Phoenix Fishing League bonus.A few other pros from the region also finished within the top 25. Alec Morrison from Peru, New York, finished in sixth place, Chris Adams from Shrewsbury, Vermont, finished in 21st place and Andrew Bechard from Plattsburgh, New York, finished in 25th place. On the co-angler side, it was Nicholas Veselka from Fishers, Indiana, taking the win. Veselka won a new boat provided by the Phoenix Fishing League for his accomplishment. Shawn Gokey from Georgia, Vermont; Hunter Navari from Colchester, Vermont; Preston Vargo from Port Henry, New York; Eric Turner from Ticonderoga, New York; and Cole Eastman from Fairfield, Vermont, were the co-anglers from the region who placed in the top 25. More fishing will be back at the marina on Sunday, June 24, with the Abu Garcia College Qualifier.
