M20 traffic news live as lorry crash and ‘substantial’ fuel spill brings traffic to halt

A reported crash involving two lorries has brought travel on the M20 between Ashford and Maidstone to a halt on Tuesday (June 6). The incident has taken place on the coastbound carriageway of the vital motorway between junctions eight and nine.

National Highways South East has reported that the crash has led to a substantial fuel spill on the road’s surface. Two lanes are currently with queues stretching back for two-and-a-half-miles.

Hefty traffic and congestion has started to build in the area. There are reports of 30 minute delays to travel on approach to the incident.

At this time is not yet known if there have been any injuries as a result. Kent Police has been approached for further details.

Police at the scene

A spokesperson for Kent Police has said:

Kent Police was called at 7.43am on Tuesday 6 June to a collision involving two lorries on the eastbound carriageway of the M20 between junctions 8 and 9. Officers and Highways officers are at the scene where no injuries have been reported.

“Two lanes are currently closed to traffic while a fuel spillage is removed and arrangements are made to recover the two vehicles. One lane remains open and there is considerable congestion on the approach to the scene.”

Two lanes closed and 2.5 miles of traffic

The latest update from traffic monitoring site Inrix states: “Queueing traffic for 2.5 miles and two lanes closed due to accident, two lorries involved and oil spillage on M20 coastbound between J8 A20 Ashford Road (Leeds Castle / Maidstone Services) and J9 A20 Fougeres Way (Ashford). Travel time is around 15 minutes.

“Sensors show traffic was held briefly adding to the delays but has since been released. Two lanes remain closed whilst traffic remains slow on opposite side likely due to onlookers.”
