Maidenhead United make Lokko their first signing of the summer – Photo 1 of 1

Maidenhead United have made their first signing of the summer, and it appears they’ve pulled off something of a coup by persuading centre half Kevin Lokko to come to York Road.

Lokko will have been much in demand after an impressive season for Farnborough in the National League South.

He helped the club finish 12th in the table and was named in the National League South team of the season by sponsors Vanarama.

Now, the 27-year-old is keen to push on again and prove himself at Maidenhead United, having also had spells at clubs such as Maidstone United, Dover Athletic and Aldershot Town.

While his main job will be making the Magpies harder to beat, he’s also netted 20 competitive goals across his career so far so hopefully will be of value in both boxes.

Speaking to Maidenhead United’s media officer, Grace Scott, after making the move to York Road, Lokko said: “I’ve come off the back of a good season with Farnborough and, because of that, I had the ambition to push up a level again,” he said. “I am very much used to this level, but I had a call from the manager (Alan Devonshire) and have had quite a few dealings with him in the past having played against his side.

“It happened really quickly, and I am really delighted to be here now. Coming here was always tough. It was a real mental battle at times and Dev has his lads set up well, very strong. It was a real mental, physical battle so I am glad to be on the same side now.

“I am very excited [to work with Devonshire]. He’s a proper football man, he’s been around for such a long time and has had a really good playing career. Obviously now [I’ve] been around for a long time too so I’m very much used to his sort of character. I’m looking forward to playing under him.”

Lokko has also worn the captain’s armband at his previous clubs and will also bring those leadership qualities to the club.

He added: “Hopefully I can bring a wealth of leadership and use my character to help do something special this season. It helps that I have played with a couple of the lads before – I have played at the back with Will (De Havilland) at Dover. That’s a big help because we have that understanding.

“Hopefully we can build on that and do something good this season.”

While the retained list is yet to be officially announced, a few Magpies have announced they are set to fly the nest this summer. Adrian Clifton is the latest to bid farewell to York Road, following another fan favourite, Ryan Upward, out of the exit door.

Clfiton signed for the Magpies in June last year having previously enjoyed two memorable spells with the club.

However, with Emile Acquah leading the line brilliantly this season, Clifton found his gametime limited. The Montserrat international featured 18 times for the Magpies, scoring just once before joining Hampton & Richmond on loan in February.

“After 198 appearances at @MUFCYorkRoad, [my time] has come to an end,” Clifton tweeted this week.

“I’d like to thank the staff I’ve worked with and the players I’ve played with over my three spells. [I’ve made] some great memories especially the 2017/18 season and great friendships.

“I wish the gaffer and players the very best, most importantly the loyal supporters who embraced me every time I’ve played for the club. I want to thank you all. Sending some Big Cliff love.”
