Major Merseyrail disruption as rail replacement buses requested
There is major disruption on two Merseyrail lines this afternoon, with rail replacement buses being requested.
The travel provider posted on Twitter at around 3pm on Monday, May 22, to inform passengers there would be “major disruption” on the Chester and Ellesmere Port lines during rush hour. They added the disruption was due to a “points failure” at Birkenhead Central.
Rail replacement buses have been requested to run between Hamilton Square and Birkenhead Central. A total of 16 services have been affected by changes to the points failure.

Greg Suligowski, Head of Customer Strategy at Merseyrail, said: “Due to a points failure, there is disruption between Birkenhead Central and Hamilton Square stations, affecting the Chester and Ellesmere Port line. Network Rail Engineers are in attendance and expect to resolve the issue as soon as possible.
“Rail Replacement buses are in operation between Birkenhead Central and Hamilton Square in both directions. We are very sorry for the disruption to passenger journeys this afternoon.

According to National Rail disruption is expected until 5pm.

2.45pm Liverpool Central to Chester has terminated at Hamilton Square.
3pm Liverpool Central to Chester is now cancelled.
3.01pm Chester to Liverpool Central will now terminate at Birkenhead Central.
3.15pm Liverpool Central to Chester will now start at Birkenhead Central.
3.15pm Chester to Liverpool Central is now cancelled.
3.30pm Liverpool Central to Chester will now start at Birkenhead Central.
3.31pm Chester to Liverpool Central is now cancelled.
3.45pm Liverpool Central to Chester will now start at Birkenhead Central.
3.45pm Chester to Liverpool Central is now cancelled.
4pm Liverpool Central to Chester is now cancelled.
4.15pm Liverpool Central to Chester is now cancelled.
4.30pm Liverpool Central to Chester is now cancelled.
Ellesmere Port Line
2.52pm Liverpool Central to Ellesmere Port has started at Birkenhead Central.
3.12pm Ellesmere Port to Liverpool Central will now terminate at Birkenhead Central.
3.22pm Liverpool Central to Ellesmere Port will now start at Birkenhead Central.
3.52pm Liverpool Central to Ellesmere Port will now start at Birkenhead Central.
