Milksha Colchester opens in city centre – here’s what we thought

So, when the Taiwanese bubble tea giant hosted its official launch party weekend I did not hesitate in heading down to its new Head Street venue.

The site, based on a former bakery, originating back to the 17th century, was absolutely packed to the rafters with punters, eager to sample the anticipated menu.

After arriving at the lavish ceremony I joined an orderly queue at the door, as a host greeted guests, handing out champagne to celebrate the day.

I passed on the bubbles, though, because I had my eyes set the multi-coloured galaxy of drinks on the tray presented before me.

I first sampled a chocolate milk drink with coffee jelly, which was my favourite. I must admit, I did go back for a few more samples, just to make sure…

I was also able to enjoy a sample of their fresh dairy ice cream, which was creamy and rich.

I then tasted a mango slushie, with coconut cream on top, as well as several other dairy drinks, with flavours ranging from brown sugar to matcha.

My sweet tooth had not yet been satisfied, so I made sure to try two of the brand’s most popular treats – their rainbow cake and the burnt Basque cheesecake.

The rainbow cake was bright enough to capture anybody’s eye, and the sweet, creamy taste matched its captivating appearance.

As someone who loves a good cheesecake, I have identified a criteria to use as a benchmark for quality – flavour, consistency and richness.

The burnt Basque cheesecake had all of that and more, with a bittersweet, burnt caramel undertone that had me coming back for a few more tasters… just to get my fix.

To complement the wealth of sweet treats, I also got to enjoy a traditional dragon dance, which brought Head Street to a standstill as hundreds of other punters stopped and watched.

The dance, which is meant to bring the venue prosperity, had hundreds of city-goers watching in awe, as a dragon swept along the road and into the shop, as a thunderous chorus of drums ricocheted off of the buildings.

Milksha is open now, serving up fresh treats baked in store and fresh bubble teas. I am sure you will love it just as much as I did.
