Here are five of the most haunted buildings in Norwich.
The Maids Head Hotel
Where: 20 Tombland, Norwich NR3 1LB
Dating back to the 13th century and made up of six different buildings, the hotel is known for its spooky goings-on.
Queen Elizabeth I stayed in the hotel during her reign, and Catherine of Aragon visited the hotel.
One of the ghosts seen is a former maid, seen moving around the hotel cleaning as she did in her former life.
It is supposedly also haunted by the ghost of an elderly man believed to be a former mayor of the town.
The Maddermarket Theatre
Where: Saint John’s Alley, Norwich NR2 1DR
The main ghost making The Maddermarket Theatre his home is a monk.
He has been seen walking across the stage and reported to be moving costumes and props around.
It is reported that when one actor forgot his lines, he felt a ghostly hug engulf him.
Lollards Pit Pub
Where: 69-71 Riverside Rd, Norfolk NR1 1SR
Built sometime between 1620 and 1970 and named after the protestant reformation group of the 1300s and the pit in which they were burnt at the stake for heresy, this pub has stood on the grounds of the burnings since the 1600s.
The cellar is thought to have held those waiting to be burnt at the stake. Customers have claimed to see a ghostly woman engulfed in flames or heard the screams of prisoners.
The Adam and Eve Pub
Where: 17 Bishopgate, Norwich, NR3 1RZ
The pub dates back to 1249, when an army of stonemasons was working on Norwich Cathedral. The Adam and Eve opened to meet their food and drink needs.
There are many ghost stories to be told from the pub’s many centuries, including Lord Sheffield, who died in the pub during the Kett’s Rebellion.
The Lord could be responsible for the strange temperatures, noises and feelings within the walls.
Augustine Steward House
Where: Augustine Steward House, 14 Tombland, Norwich
This one is slightly more gory than the others. In one room of the house, the bodies of two adults were found with human teeth marks on their legs – after dying from the plague.
Next to the bodies of the parents was the corpse of a young girl – the story goes that this child had not been consumed by the plague, but rather had choked to death on the flesh of her parents having been forced to consume them.
The ghost of a young girl is said to haunt this area of Tombland and Tombland Alley behind Augustine Steward House.
