New al fresco Hub restaurant with sunny terrace and chargrilled seafood opening in Plymouth
A popular Plymouth burger restaurant has rebranded and is reopening today at the city’s historic and sun-kissed Royal William Yard. Hub Box has rebranded and is throwing open its doors to customers as the newly-launched Hub, where there will be an emphasis on chargrilled seafood and meats plus ‘some burger favs’.
Owner Richard Boon, who opened his first business, Hub St Ives, in 2003 has now expanded his burger empire across England, with restaurants in Exeter, Cheltenham, Bristol and more. Hub Box moved to Royal William Yard in May 2022, inside the Melville building, from its former city centre location.
But now the restaurant has rebranded and has become Hub, just like its ‘mothership’ in St Ives.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday evening, the team wrote: “We’re stoked to announce that from tomorrow (June 22), we’ll be opening our doors as Hub – just like our mothership Hub St Ives where we started this journey 20 years ago.
“We recognise that we have such stunning waterfront locations and the opportunity to offer more, so will therefore be the second of our restaurants to trade as Hub!
“Inspired by the coast and our amazing local suppliers, dive into our new menu and enjoy local seafood and meats cooked on our chargrill. We’ll of course be keeping some of your burger favs like the Big Kahuna, Betsy and Hub.
“With awesome views across the Royal William Yard’s marina, an outside terrace to enjoy sundowners, and a sunny sheltered inner courtyard for the windy days, we’ve got al fresco eating and drinking covered. There’s no better place to kick back and relax for as long as you like, with a glass of rosé or pint of local craft beer.
“So, next time you are in Plymouth, head to RWY Royal William Yard and experience the brand-new Hub RWY Plymouth.”
Being beside the seaside is central to Hub Box’s origins. Starting up in St Ives harbour, the chain now boasts restaurants across the South West and Wales and plans to keep growing. Hub Box started in a shipping container on Truro’s Lemon Quay as an offshoot of the Hub restaurant in St Ives. Its first actual restaurant opened when it moved from the container to a former church in the city. It opened two sites in 2021, Falmouth and Cheltenham.
Its website reads: “It all began by the coast. In Cornwall. Way out West. Back then we simply wanted to build brilliant burgers, using fresh local produce, and serve them up in a laid-back social space. Nothing’s changed. But we’ve stopped at nothing, too. Growing, learning, creating. Building better burgers.
“From top to bottom, every ingredient counts. It’s always been that way. We build partnerships, and only source or co-create locally, sustainably, and ethically. We’re committed to positive impact, and our people are our heartbeat. We take care of them, as they take care of you. It all helps to build a better burger.”
