New Forest rules this summer include no BBQs or feeding wild ponies

A number of new rules are being introduced in the New Forest this summer to ensure the area is protected from any damage. Set to welcome thousands of visitors over the summer months, the new rules will be imposed across the entire New Forest.

As part of these new rules, visitors to the forest will be banned from lighting BBQs and could also be fined if they are caught feeding or petting the wild ponies or donkeys. The two new Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) have been introduced by New Forest District Council supported by Forestry England, the New Forest National Park Authority and the Verderers of the New Forest.

The introduction of these rules follows repeated fire damage to the forest caused by campfires and BBQs, and the growing risk of wildfires due to increasingly hotter and drier conditions. The PSPO bans the lighting of fires of any type including BBQs and any outdoor cooking facilities or equipment.

The order also makes it an offence to place, throw or drop items likely to cause a fire such as lit cigarettes. The animal rules are being brought in following injuries to the public and animal deaths resulting from being fed human food.

Teams from Forestry England, the New Forest National Park Authority and the Verderers of the New Forest will be patrolling and speaking to members of the public to explain more about the new rules. Signs and information will be in place across the forest.

The new rules will also be highlighted in the New Forest Code. They will apply from July 1, with those caught breaking them facing a £100 penalty notice which could rise to £1,000 if they are taken to court.
