Newcastle injury updates on Jacob Murphy, Sean and Matty Longstaff

Newcastle injury updates on Jacob Murphy, Sean and Matty Longstaff

Longstaff is making good progress in his recovery from a foot injury and Eddie Howe hasn’t ruled out the possibility of the midfielder playing again this season, but the visit of Albion will come too soon.

That could also prove to be the case for Murphy, who dropped to the bench and was an unused substitute at Leeds United on Saturday because of a groin issue that is still proving problematic.

“Jacob is probably the one doubt we have for the game,” said Howe in his pre-match press conference.

Newcastle have got to the bottom of Longstaff’s foot injury after two scans last week. It’s now a case of monitoring the midfielder on a daily basis as he works back to fitness.

Howe said: “I think we’re quite clear on the injury, it’s just how long it takes to heal.

“He made good progress yesterday so let’s see how he feels today. He won’t be involved in this game.”

Meanwhile, Longstaff’s younger brother Matty has undergone surgery on a knee injury, Howe revealed.

The 23-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer, suffered a season-ending injury during his loan spell with Colchester in December.

Howe said: “Matty is here. He’s just had another operation on his knee, a very minor one, we’re hopeful that he’s on the road to recovery.

“I saw him on an assault bike the other day. Anyone who has done them knows how tough they are and he was there just using his arms for about half an hour. It’s an incredible example of his attitude to his recovery. He’s doing everything he can to get back.”

Miguel Almiron made just his second start since early March in the 2-2 draw at Elland Road, with Howe delighted to have the forward back up to full speed.

“I was very pleased, it’s great to have him back,” he said.

“He’s been a huge player for us this year and in front of goal he’s been very good.

“As I always say with Miggy, he’s an incredible athlete off the ball so we’re delighted to have him back in the team.”

Newcastle go in search of one of the two wins they need to secure Champions League football against rivals Brighton on Thursday.

Howe said: “It’s a huge game and one we’re looking forward to. It’ll be a really good game between two excellent teams.

“I have a lot of respect for Brighton and what they’ve done this season. Watching them against Arsenal I was hugely impressed. It will be a really tough assignment for us but one we’re not fearful of and we’ll take a big step forward hopefully.”
