Newcastle vs Leicester LIVE commentary: Magpies one win from Champions League football

Newcastle can secure a return to the Champions League with a victory over Leicester on Monday evening.

The Magpies moved a step closer to earning their place in the top four with a comfortable 4-1 win over Brighton; however, they might not even need three points here should Liverpool fail to beat Aston Villa.

Should Villa do them a favour and nick a point at Anfield, Newcastle would just need a draw, while a Villans win seals top four for the Toon.

However, Eddie Howe‘s men could still relegate the 2015/16 Premier League champions.

The Foxes are staring the Championship in the face, and depending on other results, Leicester could be demoted at St James’ Park should they fail to win.

Dean Smith‘s side have to take three points on Tyneside, or their stay in the Premier League might be over.

Newcastle vs Leicester: Team news

The hosts are carrying a fair few injuries as they grind towards the end of the season.

Joe Willock won’t play any part after appearing to pop his hamstring against Brighton.

Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes and Elliot Anderson were all limping in and are doubtful for this one.

Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles and Matt Ritchie won’t feature.

But Howe will hope to have Jacob Murphy and Sean Longstaff back in contention.

Meanwhile, the Foxes will be without Caglar Soyuncu, James Justin, Ryan Bertrand, Jannik Vestergaard and Danny Ward.

However, Kelechi Iheanacho might return after a groin issue.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is struggling with an ankle injury but is expected to train on Sunday.

Newcastle vs Leicester: What has been said?

Toon gaffer Howe speaking after the Brighton win, said: “I thought we were outstanding.

“I feel that’s very much us at our best in that first half. We were relentless with what we did and full credit to the players for what they gave physically.

“It’s very difficult to maintain that for the full game. When Brighton scored, we were mature with what he had to do during that period before we got the late goals.

“I thought we were fantastic in the details and the distances. We won the ball back so many times and we were just frustrated [in the first half] we hadn’t scored from open play.

“We were reliant with set-plays, but as first halves go, we were delighted by half time. The players adapted really well and we were patient.

“The crowd helped us get over the line and the third goal was crucial.”
