Nottingham Forest news and transfers LIVE: Renan Lodi latest, Lingard among six released

Welcome to our live Nottingham Forest blog for Saturday, June 3.

Nottingham Forest are expected to be active in the upcoming transfer window, which officially opens for English clubs on Wednesday, June 14. But while it may not be as busy as this time last year, as the club prepared for Premier League football, there is still expected to be some business.

Steve Cooper will look to strengthen his squad ahead of a second season in the top division with Forest already linked with a number of names. The latest being Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi. Goalkeeper Ethan Horvath has also addressed his future at the City ground.

The Reds are also keen to make loan deals for Dean Henderson and Renan Lodi permanent in the summer. They did have an option in Lodi’s loan deal, but that has now reportedly expired, meaning that they will have to renegotiate with Atletico Madrid.

Forest confirmed their retained list on Friday, with Jesse Lingard among six players being released this summer at the end of their contracts. Off the pitch, Evangelos Marinakis has appointed former Villarreal Sporting Director Antonio Cordon at Olympiacos, but he is also set to take up an advisory role at the City Ground.

Aurier news sparks reaction

Nottingham Forest fans have given their reaction to the news that Serge Aurier will be staying with the club beyond the summer.

The club have confirmed that an automatic one-year extension to the full-back’s deal has been triggered after Premier League safety was secured. Steve Cooper ’s men secured survival with one game of the season remaining.

Aurier joined the club on a free transfer last summer, after leaving Villarreal at the end of his contract. He had previously played in the Premier League with Tottenham between the years of 2017 and 2021.

He became a key player for Forest in the 2022/23 season. Injury saw him miss five games in April with Forest losing all but one of those matches. He returned as captain for the crucial 3-1 home win against Brighton and Hove Albion.

But despite several standout performances, Gibbs-White was left out of the latest England squad by manager Gareth Southgate. He is likely to be involved in the U-21 Euros this summer instead.

‘Perfect’ Marinakis decision praised

Teddy Sheringham has hailed the “perfect” decision to award Steve Cooper a long-term contract when he came under pressure earlier in the season.

The Nottingham Forest boss appeared to be close to being sacked at multiple points during the campaign in order for the club to hire a more experienced Premier League manager.

Ultimately owner Evangelos Marinakis stuck by Cooper and much to the surprise of many, awarded the former Swansea boss a new contract back in October shortly after the Reds suffered a heavy 4-0 loss at Leicester City. The decision was rewarded as Forest stayed up at the expense of the Foxes, Leeds and Southampton.

Heading for the exit

Now the curtain has come down on the 2022/23 campaign, Nottingham Forest’s planning for another season of Premier League football can begin in earnest.

And with the Reds keen to establish themselves in the top-flight, they face a big summer transfer window. Overseeing the right ins and outs will be key.

Head coach Steve Cooper has said he expects a more “normal” number of signings, compared to last year’s dressing room overhaul. Technically, there is already one guaranteed addition, in the form of Chris Wood.

Forest’s conditional obligation to buy the striker from Newcastle United was triggered when he made his third loan appearance for the club. The move will then officially turn into a permanent one this summer.

The Reds have also already announced one exit, in midfielder Jack Colback. The midfielder departs the club at the end of his contract this summer.

Simon Jordan picks out Cooper

Pundit Simon Jordan believes Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper is a “balanced” individual in comparison to people “in a bubble” like Jose Mourinho.

Former Manchester United and Chelsea boss Mourinho lost his first European final as a manager on Wednesday night after his Roma team where beaten on penalties in the Europa League final against Sevilla.

It means that the Italian side will miss out on a place in the Champions League next season with speculation that the Portuguese coach could leave in the summer.

Renan Lodi problem

Nottingham Forest have encountered a problem in their attempts to sign Renan Lodi permanently this summer with the club having to ‘renegotiate’ a deal with Atletico Madrid.

The defender arrived at the City Ground on a season-long loan last summer, and played a key part in Steve Cooper ’s men securing their place in the Premier League for next season. He played a total of 28 times in the league, including starting the last eight games.

According to Marca, via SportWitness, Forest did have an option to buy Lodi for €30m included in the loan deal, but that option had to be triggered by March, something which didn’t happen. Forest are reportedly looking to ‘renegotiate’ at a lower price.

Horvath addresses his Forest future

Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Ethan Horvath has “no idea” what his future holds after helping Luton Town secure promotion to the Premier League.

The 27-year-old spent the season on-loan at the Hatters and played a key role throughout their successful campaign. He played over 50 games for Luton including in Saturday’s Championship play-off final win against Coventry City.

Victory over the Sky Blues was Horvath’s second successive play-off final win having been part of the Reds squad which beat Huddersfield in last year’s final. He made an appearance late on at Wembley for the injured Brice Samba.

What a season

Nottingham Forest’s first season back in the Premier League after a 23-year absence will live long in the memory.

A rollercoaster of a campaign has been full of ups and downs, highs and lows, and twists and turns. But it all ended with the Reds securing survival with a game to spare.

Plenty of pundits wrote Forest off back in August, and few changed their minds as time went on. Head coach Steve Cooper certainly had a number of challenges to contend with, not least getting a new-look group to gel and dealing with a significant injury list, all while managing in the top-flight for the first time.

Twice Cooper’s job came under scrutiny as the Reds had two separate winless runs. Owner Evangelos Marinakis’ decision to stick with the Welshman paid off, though, and Forest found form when it mattered most.

Picking up 11 points from their final six games, they finished in 16th place. We take a look back at some of the memorable moments from the 2022/23 season.

Former loanee set for summer transfer

Former Nottingham Forest loanee Loic Bade looks set to complete a permanent transfer to Europa League champions Sevilla after the Spanish club’s director Monchi confirmed ‘it’s done’.

Bade spent the first half of the season just gone on loan with Forest from French side Rennes. The centre-back was a deadline day arrival at the City Ground as they looked to add to their options for the Premier League in the final hours of the summer window.

However, his short stint at the City Ground didn’t go to plan. He failed to make a single appearance for the club and was only named in the Premier League matchday squad on one occasion – for the 1-0 defeat against Wolves back in October.

Cooper key to attracting players

Garry Birtles believe his old club are well placed to beat their rivals to their top transfer targets this summer.

He also feels manager Steve Cooper’s record will entice players – and that could be especially relevant in the case of Callum Hudson-Odoi after the Chelsea winger was today linked with a £10m move. The 22-year-old already knows Cooper from playing for him in the England Under-17s set up.

“The preparation for next season is going to be massive, as it always is,” Birtles told the Garibaldi Red podcast. “Every Premier League club who managed to stay up will want to build.

“Bournemouth and Fulham will want to protect their status like us. It’s never easy as there aren’t that many great players to sign but because of what we achieved this season people will want to come to our football club.

“The atmosphere at the City Ground is incredible and the away support is unbelievable. You’ve got a manager who I hope doesn’t go anywhere else.
