Nottingham Forest transfers LIVE: Merih Demiral, Tyler Adams, Kyogo Furuhashi latest

Welcome to our live Nottingham Forest blog for Thursday, June 8.

It might be the off-season but there is still plenty happening Trentside as the focus shifts to the 2023/24 campaign. There is just one week to go before the transfer window opens on June 14, and the Reds will be eager to get at least some of their business done early.

They will hope goalkeeper Dean Henderson can be one of the first new signings through the doors. Having impressed during his loan spell from Manchester United, Forest are keen to get him back – and progress is being made.

Incomings and outgoings are expected this summer as head coach Steve Cooper looks to put a squad together which can push on in the Premier League. And the transfer rumour mill is already in full swing where both are concerned.

Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Conor Coady and Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams are two of the latest names linked. Meanwhile, Everton and West Ham United are said to have taken an interest in Brennan Johnson.

We will keep you up to date with all the latest news, rumours and updates from the City Ground. Stick with us throughout the day to make sure you don’t miss anything.

Second transfer chance after January ‘refusal’

Reported Nottingham Forest target Merih Demiral is “back up for sale” in the summer transfer window.

The 25-year-old is said to have turned down a move to Forest back in the winter market this year, but Forest may now have a second bite at the cherry to sign their man.

Making progress

No sooner had survival been secured than Nottingham Forest head coach Steve Cooper was turning his attention to what happens next.

There was the sense of relief which came with the final whistle against Arsenal, of course, and jubilant celebrations followed – just as they did when the curtain came down on the season at Crystal Palace. But Cooper isn’t one to dwell on what has passed for too long.

In his post-match press conference after beating the Gunners, he spoke of the “opportunity” the Reds have at their feet. Before the trip to Selhurst Park, he stuck to a similar theme when speaking to the media. And again in the press room following full-time of the 1-1 draw.

Forest transfer ruled out as rivals snap up free agent

Crystal Palace have confirmed the signing of reported Nottingham Forest transfer target Jefferson Lerma.

The 28-year-old joins them from Premier League rivals Bournemouth on a free transfer, penning a three-year contract. Forest were said to be interested in signing the midfielder, with Leicester also linked before their relegation was confirmed.

Forest stance on Dean Henderson fee

Nottingham Forest apparently “do not want” to pay the £25million fee touted for Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

Forest do want to sign Henderson, who spent the 2022-23 season on loan at the City Ground, but will be hoping to pay a lower fee than the one Man United are said to want. Henderson was in fine form for Forest before injury cut his season short over the winter and he was replaced by Keylor Navas.

Great to see a former Red do well

Forest are being linked with a number of players as they look to strengthen their squad and build on last season. We’re going to keep you updated on what happens, as it happens.

Reds eye £8m Carlos Augusto

Nottingham Forest are trying to sign Monza left-back Carlos Augusto, according to a report.

The energetic left-back could be available for £8million as Forest look to sign new players early in the summer transfer window. Augusto is a 24-year-old Brazilian who has been capped by his country at under-20 level and started his career at Corinthians, before making the move to Italian club Monza in 2020.

According to the Daily Mail, Forest have “held initial discussions” with Monza and are hopefully of securing a deal, though the Italian side are trying to keep Augusto and have opened contract talks with him.

Loan plan

A League One loan is being sought for Nottingham Forest youngster Riley Harbottle ahead of the upcoming season.

The 22-year-old spent the 2022/23 campaign with Mansfield Town, making 37 appearances for the League Two side as they narrowly missed out on the play-offs. Manager Nigel Clough had been keen to get him back this summer.

Transfer talk

Nottingham Forest could revisit their interest in a couple of former goalkeeping targets this summer, according to reports in Italy.

The Reds are hoping to bring back Dean Henderson on a permanent basis, following his successful loan spell from Manchester United. But that hasn’t stopped links with other shot-stoppers emerging ahead of the transfer window opening next Wednesday.

Disaster

Jesse Lingard’s short spell at Nottingham Forest was a “disaster”, according to pundit Darren Bent.

Publishing their retained list last week, the Reds announced Lingard will be one of six senior players to leave the club when their contracts expire at the end of this month. It brings an end to the 30-year-old’s one-year stay at the City Ground after signing as a free agent last summer.

Bent has criticised the attacker’s impact on the pitch: “Seventeen appearances in the league, no goals, no assists. I know he’s had his injuries and I think he’s even spoken about some of his problems off the pitch in a few interviews, but it just hasn’t worked. It’s been a disaster,” hesaid on talkSPORT.

As the dust settles on the 2022/23 season, it is time to reflect on what Nottingham Forest got right on their return to the Premier League after a 23-year exile and areas for improvement as they look ahead to the 2023/24 campaign.

It is also time to assess the performances of Reds manager Steve Cooper and club owner Evangelos Marinakis, while also taking a look at some of the issues impacting on the longer term future of Nottingham Forest, such as redevelopment of the City Ground.

And as with any summer, the transfer market also looms large in our big Forest Forum with questions on the amount of cash the club needs to be spending before the window closes on September 1, and the areas of the team that are in particular need of strengthening as the Reds look to improve on their 16th-place finish.

Reds face fresh competition for Brazilian

Nottingham Forest continue to be linked with Brazilian holding midfielder Pablo Maia but have another competitor for his signature to join the growing list of admirers linked with trying to buy him this summer.

The Reds have been ‘closely monitoring’ the Sao Paulo player in recent weeks but Premier League rivals Brentford are also understood to be keen on the 21-year-old’s services following earlier reports linking him with Newcastle United, West Ham and Fulham in the UK and Spanish side Atletico Madrid.

The defensive midfielder has made 84 appearances for his Brazilian side since making his debut last year after graduating from the club’s youth set-up. He has scored five goals and provided one assist so far during his career.

Everton and West Ham ‘keen’ on £40m Nottingham Forest transfer

Everton and West Ham are “keen” to sign Nottingham Forest forward Brennan Johnson.

The 22-year-old scored eight Premier League goals in his debut top-flight season as Forest comfortably avoided relegation under head coach Steve Cooper. Those performances have attracted interest from elsewhere in the country.

Premier League rivals Everton and West Ham are both interested in signing Johnson, who Forest value at £40million, according to the Daily Mail. They will be preparing to “battle it out” for his signature during the summer transfer market.

Henderson latest

The summer transfer window officially opens next Wednesday, and it is a crucial one for Nottingham Forest as they look to push on in the Premier League.

After last year’s record-breaking signing spree, head coach Steve Cooper has said he expects “more normal” numbers when it comes to incomings this time around. The Reds have the basis of a good squad already in place, with a few quality additions required rather than anything on the scale of 2022’s overhaul.

But with that comes an added emphasis on making sure those who do come in are the right fit. That applies both in terms of character and what they can bring to the side.

Dean Henderson ticks both boxes, having quickly become a fans’ favourite during his spell Trentside. And with Forest keen to get the Manchester United loanee back, we take a look at the state of play.

Transfer talk

Nottingham Forest are said to have taken an interest in Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Conor Coady as they plot their summer transfer business.

The 30-year-old spent the season on loan at Everton, but they have decided not to take up the £4.5 million option to buy clause included in the deal. With Coady’s future at his parent side uncertain, the Reds are reported to be one of the clubs keeping tabs on developments.

Predicted XI

Head coach Steve Cooper has spoken about capitalising on the “opportunity to grow” as Nottingham Forest prepare for another season in the Premier League.

That includes strengthening the squad this summer in a bid to push on when the 2023/24 campaign begins. The transfer window officially opens on Wednesday, June 14, but the rumour mill is already in full swing.

Forest fans give verdict on Adams

Nottingham Forest fans have given a mixed response to reports linking the club with interest in Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams.

The USA international is said to be in line to depart Elland Road following the club’s relegation to the Championship. But there is likely to be plenty of interest in securing his services, with his agent having reportedly met clubs last week and Manchester United having previously been linked.

Adams signed for Leeds from RB Leipzig last summer for a reported £20 million. He penned a five-year contract which runs until 2027, but may end up seeing out only 12 months of that as the Whites find themselves vulnerable to losing some of their key players.

Forest ‘close’ to securing Hendo

Dean Henderson is “close” to completing a permanent move Nottingham Forest from Manchester United, says a European transfer specialist.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper joined the Reds on a season-long loan from Old Trafford last summer, playing 20 times in all competitions and keeping six clean sheets in the Premier League during the first six months of the campaign.

However, he has not played since January after suffering a thigh injury against Leicester City. Manager Steve Cooper drafted in Paris Saint Germain stopper Keylor Navas for the remainder of the season. Nonetheless, Henderson has remained fully invested in Forest and joined players in celebrating survival after the 1-0 win over Arsenal on the final day of the season.

Man Utd ‘hoping’ for Forest transfer

Manchester United are reportedly not looking to recall Dean Henderson with the Red Devils hoping his loan spell to Nottingham Forest can be turned into a permanent move.

The goalkeeper has impressed during his loan spell at the City Ground this season having made vital saves for the Reds earlier in the campaign before picking up a season-ending injury in January.

Forest responded to Henderson’s injury by signing former Real Madrid shot-stopper Keylor Navas on-loan. The Costa Rican also had an impressive impact but will be returning to his parent club Paris Saint-Germain.

Injury state of play

Head coach Steve Cooper has indicated this will be a crucial month for Nottingham Forest as work continues behind the scenes in preparation for the 2023/24 campaign.

For the players, however, it is an opportunity to rest and recuperate – something which will be especially welcome for those who have been struggling with injuries. Having key men sidelined for significant spells added to the challenges the Reds faced in their first season back in the Premier League.

Forest will hope for better fortune on that front next term. Following last week’s publication of the club’s retained list, here is a look at the injury state of play concerning those still on the books.
