Nottingham victim died ‘trying to save’ Somerset friend Barnaby Webber from attacker

A victim of the tragic Nottingham attacks died ‘trying to save’ her friend even though she had the opportunity to ‘run away’, it has been reported. Students Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber, both 19, died after being stabbed on Ilkeston Road on Tuesday, June 13 at around 4am.

A witness with a security camera has now said Grace heroically tried to fight the attacker off her friend Barnaby as he was stabbed. The pair were reportedly walking back from the nightclub PRYZM when they were killed, the Mirror reports.

Following that attack, school caretaker Ian Coates , 65, was found dead in Magdala Road after his van was allegedly stolen and reportedly used to attempt to run over three more people. Former university student Valdo Calocane, 31, has been charged with three counts of murder as well as three counts of attempted murder.

A resident who did not want to be named has said that home security footage showed Barnaby, from Taunton, was attacked first. She told the Daily Mail: “The boy and the girl were walking on their own, there was nobody else in the picture except the attacker, who came up from behind.

“He attacked the boy first – the girl had an opportunity to run away. But she didn’t, she tried to get the man off her friend. She tried to save the boy. They were just walking home from PRYZM after a night out, like young people do.”

The couple said they have struggled to come to terms with what they saw, with the husband reportedly adding: “What we witnessed on the screen keeps playing over in our minds. It’s awful.”
