ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Saturday at the 105th PGA Championship wouldn’t rank very high on Phil Mickelson’s list of best major championship rounds, probably not even inside the top 400, but after carding a five-over 75 at Oak Hill on a relentlessly rainy Saturday, there was a time for some reflection from the golfing legend.

By making the cut a day earlier, Mickelson joined Jack Nicklaus (131) and Gary Player (102) as the only men to make 100 major championship cuts. It’s an incredible achievement that displays a physical, technical, and mental longevity in sport that is nearly inconceivable.

“It shows that I’ve had a lot of great experiences in the game of golf and that I’ve had a lot of great years and opportunities and I guess life experiences,” Mickelson said after his third round. “Playing in these tournaments is something I’m very appreciative of.”

Mickelson is back at the PGA Championship after a year’s absence, choosing not to defend his unforgettable 2021 victory at Kiawah Island after startling comments he made about Saudi Arabia, and his role in fracturing golf’s professional game temporarily drove him from his sport’s biggest stage.

Where Mickelson’s legacy ends up is anyone’s guess, as time has a way of rounding off the harshest of corners, but his record in the game is unimpeachable. He has 45 PGA Tour victories and six major championships, and is the only man to win one of golf’s crown jewels after the age of 50. A month after somehow finishing tied for second at the Masters, Mickelson has added yet another milestone to one of golf’s most interesting careers.

“I mean, it just shows how old I am, I guess, and how many years I’ve been playing,” he said. “But it’s been really fun to participate in so many great events and play well in them.”
