History of the stadium

Welcome to the home stadium of Sheffield United Football Club, Bramall Lane. The ground is one of England’s oldest football stadia and predates the Blades having been opened in 1855.

Sheffield United’s stadium opened as the base of Sheffield United Cricket Club, who founded the football club in 1889. Its designers also created the ground to be used for athletics and it would host baseball, basketball, cycling, lacrosse, tennis, rugby and football in its early years.

The first football game to take place at Bramall Lane occurred in December 1982 as Sheffield FC met Hallam FC to raise money for a charity campaign. While the stadium Sheffield United have always called home had also held the first football cup final, the Youdan Cup, in 1867.

Bramall Lane has hosted many footballing firsts

Further footballing firsts also took place at Sheffield United’s stadium. Bramall Lane was also the scene of the first game to feature fixed crossbars in 1883 and the first game to be played under floodlights in 1878. While the England national side first played at the ground in 1883.

Changes have been made to the ground since Bramall Lane first opened its doors in 1855, as well. Sheffield United erected new stands at the stadium in 1896, 1897 and 1900 before they removed the cycle track in 1901. They also added roofs to certain stands in 1911 and 1935.

But damages suffered during the blitz in December 1940 destroyed parts of the ground. The bombing of the stadium demolished half of the John Street Stand, the roof of the Shoreham Street Kop and damaged large parts of the pitch forcing the Blades to re-do the earlier work.

Sheffield United have regularly redeveloped Bramall Lane

The Great Sheffield Gale come February 1962 also damaged the Shoreham Street stand after a floodlight collapsed. While Sheffield United have since continually redeveloped the ground with the Bramall Lane Stand opened in 1966 and the South Stand opening its doors in 1975.

Sheffield United would later spend two years rebuilding the John Street Stand from 1994 to 1996. The work also saw the Blades add seating to the lower tier of the Bramall Lane Stand. While the club filled in the corners during 2001 and 2006 to form the ground as it is today.

Naming rights deals have altered the names given to some of the stands over the years. The South Stand also became the Tony Curie Stand come 2018 in honour of the Sheffield United legend. While the Blades built a hotel beside the South Stand and Bramall Lane end in 2008.

How to get to Bramall Lane

Fans can get to Bramall Lane via a number of means given the location of Sheffield United’s stadium. Their ground is easily accessible by car with visitors arriving from the north taking Junction 33 along the M1, junction 29 from the south and Junction 31 or 33 from the east.

Supporters travelling from the west should use the A57 to get to Sheffield United’s stadium. Public transport also serves Bramall Lane with the stadium a 10-minute walk from the tram stop at Granville Road. The ground is also one mile away from the Sheffield Railway Station.

A host of bus routes from around Sheffield also get fans near to Bramall Lane. Routes 47 and 48 from the Sheffield Interchange stop at Shoreham Street and route 53 will stop at Queens Road. While routes 33, 43, 44/44a and 252 departing from Arundel Gate visit Bramall Lane.
