Special plan announced for Max Verstappen Canada race suit after milestone win

Fans could own the race suit worn by Max Verstappen in Canada where he won Red Bull’s 100th grand prix.

It was a race of many milestones for both driver and team as Red Bull became just one of five constructors to break the 100-win barrier, while Verstappen’s 41st victory drew him level with Ayrton Senna.

The race in Montreal was not one of the more challenging ones of the Dutchman’s career with Verstappen leading from start to finish but fans will now be able to own a part of that historic day.

Verstappen has put his race suit up for auction in order to raise money for the spinal cord charity Wings for Life, and the winner will also be treated to a meet and greet with the driver as well as a tour of Red Bull’s Milton Keynes factory.

The auction is through F1 Auctions and by lunchtime on Thursday, the figure already stood at over £27k well before its July 4 end date.

The race suit will be handed over at the Red Bull HQ and team boss Christian Horner said: “This suit has a place in the team and Max’s history books. 100% of the winning auction bid will go directly towards funding spinal cord injury research.”

CEO of Wings for Life UK Emma Hind said: “Red Bull and Max Verstappen are incredible supports of Wings for Life and this historic worn race suit will help raise vital funds for pioneering research projects that have and will continue to change people’s lives.”

It is not the first time in recent memory that a driver has auctioned off a piece of race worn memorabilia for a good cause.

Following the cancellation of the race weekend in Imola, Ferrari man Charles Leclerc auctioned the helmet he wore during the Monaco Grand Prix and set a record amount.

The red and white helmet sold for £262,700 which auctioneers RM Sotheby’s claim is a world record price for a racing helmet. It is almost twice as expensive as the €162k paid for Ayrton Senna’s 1990 F1 season helmet back in 2019.

It was not just the helmet that raised money with Leclerc’s race suit, gloves and boots all sold off to bring the total up to £370k.

The proceeds from that auction went to the victims of the recent flooding in Italy.
