Telly doctor Amir Khan wows Bury St Edmunds audience with some taboo themes

Dr Amir Khan, television’s most famous doctor and a regular on GMB and Lorraine, kept a large audience entertained last night with tales of patients, exploding boils and, of course, Mama Khan.

The trendy (on his own admission) doc was dressed in scrubs and comfy Nike trainers for both parts of his Apex show – but the audience were given anything but a comfy ride. Anyone working so closely with the NHS cannot fail to have a view on how it is run, after all.

Amir managed to put across his view of the NHS clearly but with feeling. He loves the NHS and wants to protect it and see it properly funded. He wants it to be free to all, and he wants healhcare workers paid properly and encouraged to join it in large numbers.

Politics aside, and it really wasn’t a party-political broadcast, the Bradford-based GP entertained with tales of his fearsome mum. The 76-year-old sounds like an awesome cook, but awesome, too, in ways of the heart.

Amir detailed a failed attempt to secure him a future wife in Cardiff, orchestrated by Mama Khan. The attempt failed miserably, but not before Mama Khan had managed to snaffle a packet of Ritz Crackers to crunch on for the return trip to Yorkshire from the Welsh capital.

And his mum never lets Amir have a night off. Many a time, supposedly on a trip home for tea, Amir knows he will be called on by an auntie or friend for some off-the-books medical advice for seemlingly trivial ailments. But he takes it all in good humour.

Doctor in the House was a pleasant walk through Amir’s life, racist incidents et al. The cynics might say he was on his tour to promote his upcoming book which will hit shelves in September. But those same cynics were shot down at the death when he revealed that money rasied from this short tour will go to the victims of the recent earthquake in Turkey and Syria.

Dr Khan took us from taboos like sex and suffering, through politics, dry vaginas and floppy penises. And he managed to do it all with a smile on his face and without the slightest embarrassment. Just what everyone wants from their regular GP. But believe me, Amir Khan is anything but a regular GP and I hope his passion for the NHS and his love of people in general and the world at large can be a prescription for even bigger and better things to come.
