The giant lido an hour from London that is perfect for any nervous swimmers

On a warm summer’s day, there’s nowhere we’d rather be than at a lido. Whether stretched out on the decking with a book or plunging into the water that is a very specific shade of turquoise, the lido is the place to be. And one on the South coast could be the perfect solution, particularly for those who aren’t a fan of, or are nervous about, taking a dip in the sea but still want to enjoy the vibe of a day out at the beach.

What is a Lido?

A Lido , an Italian word for “beach”, is an outdoor swimming pool near a beach or even in a city where people can swim and relax. Facilities vary but lidos generally offer basic changing rooms and showers. The colourful row of changing rooms surrounding Victorian lidos is an iconic image.

Lidos are continuing to make a comeback today, and many of the original historic lidos have been restored to their former heyday glory. The Lido is a safe environment that enables you to build confidence in the water at your own pace. There are always competent lifeguards on hand.

Saltdean Lido in Brighton

Designed by architect RWH Jones, Saltdean Lido is the only grade II* listed coastal lido in the country. It could be the perfect solution if you are looking for a trip out of the city this summer. But this Lido was very nearly going to be banished to the history books.

After an extensive campaign by local residents, the Save Saltdean Lido Campaign successfully lobbied the freeholders of the site (Brighton & Hove City Council) to stop housing development and take back the lease on the site. Luckily, this saved the Lido and it reopened in 2017.

What’s it like?

The swimming pool offers heated water and there is a separate children’s paddling pool and play area. There are changing room facilities, toilets and on-site there are food and beverage options.

The Lido may be perfect for people of all ages and skill levels. Not being able to see the bottom in the sea, lake or river can throw even the most experienced swimmer. That’s why this Lido could be ideal for nervous swimmers.
