Thompson to Play for New York’s Summer League Squad – The Bloomingtonian

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – June 25, 2023

Race Thompson, former forward for the Indiana men’s basketball team, has secured a contract with the New York Knicks to participate in the NBA 2K24 Summer League 2023 in Las Vegas.

Thompson, who played for the Hoosiers for six years, averaged 7.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game in his 130 appearances for IU. He started in 91 of his last 92 games. Throughout his career, Thompson displayed efficiency, shooting 51.1% (340-of-744) from the field and 64.6% (204-of-316) from the free-throw line.

As a two-time team captain for Indiana, Thompson’s performance during the 2021-22 season earned him recognition as Honorable Mention All-Big Ten by the league’s voting media members. Under the guidance of first-year head coach Mike Woodson, Thompson achieved career highs in points (11.1), rebounds (7.5), assists (1.4), and steals (1.1). His contributions included a personal best of 15 three-pointers, helping lead the Hoosiers to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.

Earlier this offseason, Thompson’s skills were on display at the Portsmouth (Va.) Invitational Tournament. The event, which has been a platform for professional scouts to assess players’ abilities since 1953, invited Thompson as one of the 64 college basketball seniors in attendance.

The NBA Summer League is set to kick off on July 7 in Las Vegas, with teams engaging in four preliminary games before the tournament commences on July 15. The Summer League champion will be crowned on July 17.
