Thunderstorms to batter parts of the UK as yellow Met Office weather warning issued

Thunderstorms are set to batter parts of the UK as the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for this weekend. Several parts of the UK have been issued with the yellow weather warning for thunderstorms, in force from tomorrow.

Forecasters have warned disruption could been caused, including flooding, as thunderstorms develop across northern England and Scotland. The warning will come into force at 1pm and last until 9pm.

Properties could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings and temporary outdoor structures from floodwater, lightning strikes, large hail or strong winds. The Met Office said some communities are at risk of being temporarily cut off by flooded roads.

The weather warning covers the East Midlands, North East England, Grampian, Highlands and Eilean Siar, Orkney and Shetland as well as Central, Tayside and Fife, Mirror Online reports. The Met Office said there was “uncertainty” over whether thunderstorms develop as cooler conditions follow from the west.

But there is a chance an “organised line of thunderstorms” could develop across northern Britain on Sunday afternoon. They are then expected to clear east into the North Sea during the evening.

The Met Office said: “This is more likely to happen across eastern parts of the warning area including northeast England and eastern Scotland. Rainfall amounts will vary significantly, but some locations could see 30-40 mm in 1-2 hours. Frequent lightning, large hail (up to 3 cm in diameter) and strong, gusty winds will be additional hazards.”
