Wallsend woman jailed for 14-year ‘campaign of hate’ against former partner

A woman who subjected her ex to a “campaign of hate” lasting 14 years in which she made allegations about him online has been jailed.

Anna Kornas has repeatedly posted “malicious and baseless” allegations online about her ex, breaching court orders banning her from doing so and making his life a “living hell”, a court heard.

Kornas, who has been jailed previously for breaching a restraining order imposed to try to stop her behaviour, was convicted of 12 further breaches of the order after a trial. During that hearing, she told Newcastle Crown Court she had committed the offences so she could air her views in public in court.

As the 54-year-old, of Holderness Road, Wallsend, was locked up, her ex outlined the impact the allegations have had on his life. He said in a victim statement: “She has caused me shock and anxiousness for years. This is a long-term issue.

“She may go quiet for a few months but always sticks her head above the parapet. I’m always waiting for the next thing.

“I know this is unlikely to ever stop. I feel safe when she’s in prison and this is the only way to stop her.”

He added that the “vindictive, hurtful and ridiculous allegations” show she has a “vendetta” against him, adding: “It’s had a profound impact on my wellbeing. I’ve been to hell and back.

“I can only hope at some point she will stop her vendetta against me and I can get on with my life. This is a living hell.

“I believe this woman is poison and she will never stop until she ruins me. She still appears smug and self-righteous as if she’s right.

“I’ve had to change my life, my job and uproot my life entirely. Since leaving her, my life has been a living hell. The latest breaches of the restraining order have massively affected my health and wellbeing and I’m suffering panic attacks.

“I’m absolutely terrified about what she will do next, I’m living in constant fear and anxiety. I can never see this ending. She has said previously she will never stop harassing me.

“She’s conducted a campaign of hate against me which is relentless. She has made malicious and baseless accusations which I’m convinced will continue after her release from prison.”

He left Kornas in 2009 after six years married to her and they divorced in 2011. A restraining order was later made prohibiting her from doing five things, including displaying or posting information relating to him online and social media and posting information or material relating to allegations involving her ex.

In March 2021 he was told by a family member that Kornas had posted on Twitter making allegations. A police investigation showed she had made a total of 12 such posts. The court heard Kornas has a series of similar offences on her record. She has 16 previous convictions, including for breaching restraining orders in 2015, 2016,2017, 2018 and 2019. She has received various sentences, including being locked up.

Kornas was found guilty of 12 counts of breaching the restraining order by posting matters about him on public forums such as Twitter and Facebook, between 2019 and 2021.

Judge Christopher Prince said that during her trial, Kornas stated she had breached the order so she would be put on trial and could use the court as a public forum to air her views.

He told her: “You utterly refuse, as you have demonstrated by your repeated conduct, to comply with court orders. Whatever your personal beliefs may be, you seem to fail to recognise the law fully permits you to hold personal and private beliefs but prohibits you from expressing those beliefs publicly. That’s such a simply concept you must understand it but you refuse to comply with an order of the court.”

The judge added that there was nothing to indicate Kornas intended to abide by the restraining order in the future. He jailed her for two years and said the order continues indefinitely.

Matthew Hopkins, defending, said: “Her best mitigation is she has now stopped breaching the order. She has not breached the order since 2021.

“She was a law-abiding and productive member of society (in the past). She then embarked on a course of conduct which the jury decided was inexcusable.

“We don’t know whether the jury convicted her on the basis she said things that she believed to be false or if she believed they were true but that didn’t give her an excuse to breach the court order. In my view it’s more likely to be the second explanation.”

“She’s had depression and an adjustment disorder and it’s likely she has PTSD.”
