Muhoozi Kainerugaba is the son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.Below is the biography of the man who will succeed Museveni as Ugandan president.

Early Life

Muhoozi Kainerugaba was born on April 24th 1974 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He is the son of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni (father) and Janet Kataaha Museveni (mother) who is also the first lady of Uganda. Muhoozi is a brother to Natasha Museveni Karugire and Patience Museveni Rwabwogo. He is also from Munyankole tribe and lives in Munyonyo, Kampala.

Education

Muhoozi Kainerugaba started his early life and education in Tanzania, he then moved to Mount Kenya Academy in Nyeri, in Kenya and later left to study in Sweden.

Muhoozi returned to Uganda after his father became the president of Uganda in 1986. He then proceeded to attend Kampala Parents School; King’s College Buddo for a short while and later moved to St. Mary’s College Kisubi, a Kampala neighbourhood, where he completed both O’ and A’ level studies.

After high school General Muhoozi began his military training in the year 1994, however he did not join the UPDF until 1999. He later got admitted to Royal Military College Sand Hurst to study Officer Cadet Course, where he graduated in the year 2000.

Moreover, General Muhoozi joined the Egyptian Millitary Academy where he studied Commander’s course and Battalion Commander’s Course. After the Egyptian military Muhoozi proceeded to join the Kalama Armoured Warfare Training School, in Kalamba, Mubende district which is situated in the central Uganda.

Furthermore, in the year 2007 General Muhoozi got admitted to a one year course at the United States Army Commander and General Staff College fort Leaveworth, Kansas . He graduated in june 2008. Muhoozi continued his studies at the South African National Defense College where he undertook and completed the Executive National Security programme.  

Muhoozi is not in possession of any confirmed non-military post-secondary certificates or degrees. It is unclear if he was able to complete his studies at the University of Nottingham, although some sources claimed he spent two years there earning a BA in political science from 1996 to 1998..

Military Career

General Muhoozi was first assigned to the Presidential Protection Unit as a second Lieutenant upon his return from Sandhurst in the year 2000. He was later promoted to the rank of the major in UPDF where he became a brigade commander in the presidential guard brigade.

General Muhoozi received another promotion in 2008, this time to Lieutenant Colonel and Commander of the Special Forces Group in the Ugandan People’s Defense Force, following his graduation from Fort Leaveworth. On May 12th 2016 he was again promoted to the rank of the Major General by his father President Yoweri Museveni.

On January 10th 2017, General Muhoozi got posted to be a senior presidential adviser for a special operation. This move made people assume that president Museveni was preparing his son to be the future President of Uganda. Some advisers also commented and said that by appointing Muhoozi as the adviser to the president was a move by president Museveni to expose his son to the political space in order for him to gain some experience.

In addition, in 2019, Muhoozi got another promotion that placed him on that moved him from the rank of Major General to Lieutenant General; this was in military promotions exercise that involved more than 2000 UPDF men and women.

General Muhoozi has appeared in the past to make controversial statements on his social media about capturing Nairobi, this led to him being removed as a commander. However the next day, president Yoweri Museveni promoted him to become a full general from the lieutenant level.

General Muhoozi is married to his wife Charlotte Nankunda Kutesa and together they have three children.
