What you need to know
- The latest build of Android 14 Beta 2.1 is causing freezing and crashing issues for the Google Camera app.
- The freeze occurs when a user switches their camera app to the ultra-wide lens.
- Reportedly switching to portrait mode and then back to standard mode when opening the app fixes the freezing and crashing.
Google’s most recently pushed beta version of Android 14 is apparently causing problems for users interested in taking some photos.
As noted by Android Police, the latest Android 14 Beta 2.1 build causes the Google Camera app to crash for owners of Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series devices. Looking deeper, the freeze persists when a user tries to swap the camera lens of the aforementioned devices for the ultra wide angle lens.
Coupled with freezing, the app also crashed. If a user somehow managed to avoid the freeze and then switched to the app’s recording mode, the app would crash and display a message saying “Something went wrong. Part of the last video may not have been saved.”
Oddly enough, if a user jumps into capture mode when opening the Camera app, the program won’t crash, even if they switch between the main and ultra-wide lenses.
Also, users participating in Android 14 Beta 2.1 have been asked to download a patch of 300 MB or more for the Google Camera app. However, this didn’t really fix any of the issues, so maybe this patch isn’t related. However, Android Police discovered a possible fix for the freezing and crashing. The publication states when opening the Camera app, switch to portrait mode and then back to standard. Users should be able to switch between their primary and ultra-wide lenses without much trouble.
Or, if you’re quick, you can also take a photo as soon as the app opens. This has also produced some positive results with the buggy status of the app in the latest beta version.
Furthermore, a thread has appeared on IssueTracker where a user with a Pixel 6a also reported crashes with the Google Camera app in the latest beta version. A member of Google has replied to the thread, so it seems the crashing issues are at least on their radar at the moment.
The Camera app previously saw a problem as the early May Beta 2 build brought a host of bug fixes to Pixel devices. The implemented fix was intended to solve an issue users encountered where a strange green-colored tint was placed over a recently used app when selected in the app’s thumbnail preview in the bottom corner.
On the other hand, last week Google pushed its latest Android 14 Beta 2.1 build to those who opted in. The latest test ushered in several bug fixes related to the Android system and app stability. Another bug fix was included that should fix some users who were experiencing issues opting out of the Android 14 beta program. Some users were unable to complete the configuration of their device.
