Aston Villa transfer news LIVE: Tielemans agrees to join on free transfer, Oxlade-Chamberlain poised to follow

Hello, and welcome to our rolling news updates on Aston Villa’s summer transfer news – some likely, some off the wall but all of them intriguing as Unai Emery works to put together a team capable to going to the next level in 2023/24.

One done deal is that of Youri Tielemans, with the club confirming they have agreed a deal to sign the former Leicester City midfielder on a free transfer.

The bread and butter of the new season will be the Premier League, but Villa fans have the added frisson of European football to savour too with entry to the Europa Conference League.

There is no doubt Villa will see themselves capable of emulating West Ham and winning the competition next year, although to have any chance of doing so they first have to negotiate a two-legged play-off in August. We have an update on their hopes of being seeded for the competition.

To make that hope a reality, Emery will also be looking to strengthen his squad, and some of the players already linked with Villa show the level of talent he is keen to recruit, and the areas of the team he thinks needs work.

Some potential deals have already fallen by the wayside, with the likes of Marco Asensio and Manuel Ugarte now seemingly certain to join PSG after compelling talk of Villa interest.

Emery old boy Pau Torres is another player being heavily linked along with Liverpool’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Leicester City’s Harvey Barnes.

Of course, the Villa boss needs an expert eye to help him recruit. As such, the club are exploring the possibility of poaching legendary Sevilla sporting director Monchi. We will have the latest news from in and around Villa Park throughout the day…

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain transfer truth after Aston Villa linked with outbound Liverpool star

Aston Villa have been strongly linked with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is set to leave Liverpool this summer, but it’s understood that at this stage he is not close to joining Unai Emery’s squad.

The 29-year-old is leaving Liverpool this summer after six years on Merseyside, having joined them from Arsenal back in 2017. His contract at Anfield is expiring and talkSPORT had claimed Villa were “on the verge” of signing him on a free transfer, but contrary to those claims, a move is not advanced.

He made almost 150 appearances during this time at Liverpool, scoring 18 goals from midfield in that time. Oxlade-Chamberlain was part of the squads that won the Champions League, Premier League, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup under Jurgen Klopp at Anfield. Before that, he won the FA Cup three times with Arsenal.

What Youri Tielemans will bring to Aston Villa as Unai Emery closes in on first summer transfer

Youri Tielemans is set to become Aston Villa’s first signing of the summer transfer window after Leicester City confirmed he will be leaving the King Power Stadium as a free agent.

Unai Emery was frustrated in his attempts to sign a midfielder in January and was keen to recruit Tielemans this month, while the Villa head coach will remain in the market to add more depth in that department in the coming weeks. Belgium international Tielemans has been courted by a number of clubs in recent weeks, but Villa have fought off fierce competition to land the 26-year-old.

After agreeing to join Villa, the Tielemans will undergo a medical ahead of signing a contract with the club. He is poised to be the first of several players to arrive at Villa this window as Emery continues to build a squad capable of competing across four fronts next season; in the Premier League, Europa Conference League and the two domestic cup competitions.

What Tielemans will bring

Tielemans contested the sixth most tackles and won the 10th most tackles in the league that season as Leicester finished in fifth-place for the second year in a row. In 2021/22, the Foxes finished in eighth – four points behind West Ham who qualified for the Europa Conference League – with Tielemans once again proving crucial to their best moments of the campaign.

After opting to remain at the club last summer, he struggled in an under-performing Leicester side who were relegated on the final day of the season. Despite not living up to his own high standards, Tielemans still performed well against fellow Premier League midfielders.

Of all midfielders in the English top-flight, he completed the eighth most passes into the final third and 181 progressive passes, which is 33 more than Douglas Luiz, who led the way for Villa. His xA (expected assists) value was 3.3, which is the same as John McGinn’s, while he made exactly the same number of tackles as the Scot (66), but won a greater share of his ground duels.

Only Arsenal’s Thomas Partey recorded a better successful take-on rate than Tielemans last season, with the Belgium international completing 74 per cent of his take-ons. McGinn completed 64 per cent of his last term, while only Thiago has recorded a lower tackled during take-ons percentage than Tielemans of all midfielders.

Tielemans agrees to join

Aston Villa have reportedly agreed a deal to sign central midfielder Youri Tielemans on a free transfer.

The 26-year-old is said to be undergoing a medical ahead of officially joining Villa once his Leicester City contract expires on July 1. According to The Athletic, the deal is agreed with a medical now taking place, as Tielemans is “on the cusp” of being Unai Emery’s first signing of the summer transfer window.

Tielemans spent four-and-a-half years in the Premier League with Leicester, establishing himself as one of their best players as they won the FA Cup and Community Shield, as well as playing in Europe. Villa qualifying for European football will likely have been key to persuading the midfielder to sign.

Former Villa chief makes Grealish admission

Former Aston Villa chief Bryan Jones has admitted that ex-Villans star Jack Grealish is the best player to come through the club’s academy during his time there.

The Manchester City superstar is set to feature during Saturday’s Champions League final against Inter Milan. Having already won the Premier League and FA Cup this season, victory for Pep Guardiola’s side in Istanbul will see them match the 1999 Treble of rivals Manchester United.

Grealish left Villa Park to join the Citizens in 2021 for a huge £100 million fee, the biggest in British football history. The 27-year-old came through the Villa academy under Jones who also helped to unearth the likes of Gary Cahill, Gareth Barry, Steven Davis and Barry Bannan.

There are two pots from which teams will be drawn from, seeded and unseeded. In theory, more seeded teams should qualify for the competition than unseeded teams. Villa would prefer to be a seeded team as they’d be more likely to face a team who do not have a high UEFA coefficient, or ranking, which takes into account historical performance.

Currently, Villa are unseeded due to their low UEFA coefficient. but this could change over the weekend…

Villa face Dortmund competition

Borussia Dortmund are ‘interested’ in Aston Villa linked Crysencio Summerville, it is being claimed.

Summerville has a contract with the Lily Whites that runs until the summer of 2026 so will require a hefty transfer fee to prise him away from the Yorkshire club in the upcoming transfer window, which opens on June 14.

Left-field transfer link

Aston Villa are apparently ‘in the race’ to sign Leicester City star James Maddison, it is being claimed.

Although Maddison’s City team-mate, Harvey Barnes, is high in the betting to become a Villa player this summer, this is the first time the England player has been linked. Free agent midfielder Youri Tielemans is said to be on Villa’s radar too.

But Maddison, who is under contract at Leicester until next summer, does not look a natural fit for Villa under Unai Emery, and especially within the 4-3-3 system the Spanish head coach tends to deploy. Our verdict? Unlikely, but watch this space…

Clock ticking on Monchi move

Sevilla have reportedly set Monchi a deadline of Monday to make a decision on his future amid speculation linking him to a role at Aston Villa.

Earlier this week, it was made public that Monchi had asked to leave the club following reports stating Villa were keen to appoint a sporting director to work alongside Johan Lange. Monchi has been one of the names under consideration by the Villa hierarchy after Mateu Alemany opted against joining the club last month.
