Marie Riley Obituary – The MetroWest Daily News

With sadness, the Riley family shares that Marie C. (Denn) Riley, “Nana,” gently passed away Friday, June 2nd at the age of 91, surrounded by loved ones, in the Natick home she shared for 65 years with her late husband Gene Riley. Born in 1932 in Northampton, Marie’s family also lived in Vermont and New York, settling in West Roxbury. Graduating from Framingham State College in 1953 with a degree in Dietetics and Nutrition, Marie began her career at Mass General Hospital. After raising her children Marie worked at Head Start, Barber Brothers, Berkshire Hathaway Realty, was active at the Saint James Parish and was an avid supporter of Native American Children’s groups. While pursuing her studies, Marie met the love of her life, Gene, at The Buttercup donut shop in West Roxbury and they married in 1953. He would never tire of saying “she was beautiful and smart.” Settling in East Natick, taking care of five children she never had a dull moment. The Riley home was a revolving door for children, friends and the never-ending array of cats and dogs, all of whom Marie cared for. Marie was the center of the village and the neighborhood children were often heard saying “we have Mrs. Riley.”

Marie had presence, quiet strength, and an unwavering devotion to her family. Well-read, with clear opinions, and never at a loss for words, she enjoyed meaningful one on one conversations, competitive card games (with Gene not as her partner), British detective and comedy series and entertaining all who graced her table. The light of her life was being “Nana” to her 15 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. The monthly Granddaughter Brunches brought much joy as did sitting in her chair holding court with the many who loved her. Not to be defined by her declining health, Marie kept us on our toes, remained the Matriarch, and spent her final days telling family and friends how much she loved them. Able to visit with decade old friends and lovingly cared for by her family, peace was found. Marie’s legacy is one of devotion to family and the Riley Clan stands in grace and gratitude for having had her for 91 loving, meaningful years.
