There are lots of reasons for and against the return of Brendan Rodgers as Celtic manager. The fan base is split due to the way the Northern Irishman walked out of the club at a critical point in the 2018/19 season in order to join Leicester City in the Premier League. Most recognise the success he brought the club in his first spell though.
They can see the benefit in swiftly appointing an experienced and capable new manager. Rodgers certainly fits that bill and would be a good fit in many ways.
After Ange Postecoglou’s recent departure, there are many fans who now just want a hard working successful manager and are happy to forego any great emotional attachment to whoever is selected. That sentiment could work well in Rodgers’ favour.
Rodgers has his critics elsewhere too. Former Crystal Palace owner and current football pundit, Simon Jordan, is one of the latest to question the Northern Irishman’s potential move back to Glasgow as well as the job he did at Leicester City.
Rodgers sent Leicester City message as Celtic return nears
As reported by the Leicestershire Live, Jordan told talkSPORT listeners:
“I maintain and retain my view that I don’t think he covered himself in glory with Leicester.
“I think he is a huge part of the reasons why they got relegated.”
Jordan further went on to add about the job that Rodgers did in his time with Leicester City:
“The job he did at Leicester irritates me because it was poor and he’s gotten away with it. He spent a year in the media spinning a narrative about diplomacy and never saying anything, and a football club has ultimately lost its place in the Premier League as a result of that. And off he sails.”
Jordan isn’t sitting on the fence there and it is a view shared by some of the Celtic support as well. But Rodgers undeniably has had some top times as a manager, not the least in his Invincible season with the Hoops. The fans would be very happy with a repeat of that part for sure.
Also, it might be a big stretch to say that Rodgers did a poor job at Leicester City. He won the FA Cup and the Community Shield with them, and almost got them into the Champions League on two occasions.
